I am shopping for a computer for a friend, she only needs a basic inexpensive computer. It is a bad time to shop for a computer as we just went through a rush of specials from the big box electronics store and they will give it a rest before they offer any new specials.
The clerk at the electronics store tried to steer me away from the Acer computers, telling me that they will fall apart in 6 months. I think that is an exaggeration. I think he just wanted to steer me towards the higher end computers. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with Acer computers?

I am a software developer by trade and I travel a lot, my first of many to come ACER 1410, 11.6" LED, intel core 2 solo is 30 months old, in continuous use 8+ hours a day, still holds a 3 hr charge, no problems, ever! Make sure to get the intel processor, avoid the atom. best computer I have ever owned + it fits on an aircraft tray table!!! (i have owned 6 dell's, 5 IBM think pads, 2 HP, countless no-names, etc etc etc.....) The track pad is amazing, a bit like an IPAD.

You're probably right. I've had no problems with Acers.

Even if it does crap out, the cost of buying a new one would probably be in the same ball park as buying an extended warranty, which is what they will also try to sell you.

I have an Acer laptop, and been using it for 7 months now. No problms as of yet. Acer sells processing power and memory at a lower price than the others.

I know many people who own Acer computers and not a single one of them ever complained about them.

2 years for my laptop. Paid about 400 for it is memory serves.

I've always cheaped out in the past 20 years and it has never bit me in the ass.

you're best ask someone that does repairs...acer uses cheap components..its considered a cheaper quality....I wouldn't buy an Acer.
Although the laptops have improved....I wouldn't touch an emachine either cheap motherboards, cheap capacitors just like the acers...

Own an Acer desktop for 3+ years, works well and no problems as yet. Outdoors, I tend to see more Acer laptops and particularly netbooks than any other brand. Some of their newer laptops are excellent, especially at that pricepoint.

Bought an Acer laptop 4 or 5 years ago with extended warranty. Within 2 years one of the hinges broke for no reason. When I inquired about the warranty they said I didn't buy the "extra" warranty that covered hardware. First and last extended warranty for me. But in computer time that was ancient history.

Acer has a standard1 yr warranty. I little netbook that had an issue software and hardware with 9 months. Called them up, they sent a box for shipping, fixed it sent it back free of charge.

First problem I have ever had with an ACER.

This laptop I have had for years, never an issue.

2 home PC's - never an issue.

Net book is now trashed, battery is fried but it lasted 2 years and $330, I can't complain.

Exactly the same situation for me except I've had my Acer probably three years.

I also agree about Best Buy. I bought it there and the sales guy tried so hard to get the Geek Squad to do set up that his statements were insulting. He obviously thought I was totally computer illiterate. To this day I wish I had reported him to the store manager, not that it would have mattered.

My home PC is an Acer, had it over 2 yrs now and never a problem, I just use it for surfing, emails and internet but it only cost me $499 and it works great. The salesperson is probably, at least, on quota, like at Best Buy, no commission but a sales target to hit, upsell you= closer to the sales target.

Back then Acer was pretty garbage. But now they have improved significatly. Like Samsung with phones.

Have an Acer laptop for over two years, no problems at all. Bought it at Walmart for just over $400. Before that I had a Toshiba that I bought at Bestbuy, it was a real piece of shit, kept crashing and loosing all info. I will never shop at Bestbuy again because of their rebate scamming. I was supposed to get a rebate of $100 with the laptop and I sent in their receipt with the rebate form. Two months later I get everything back with a notice that the Bestbuy receipt was not the correct one for the rebate. After going around and around with Bestbuy I got a different receipt, but when I sent it in the rebate was rejected because it was not timely. Looking on the internet I see that there are several cases of Bestbuy pilling rebate scams.

I've had an Acer for almost 3 years.. They make OKAY computers for the most part.. They're computers aren't great.. they are just okay in my opinion. I havent had any major problems with my machine since I got it. The DVD rom drive is a bit flimsy and I sometimes got the "white screen of death" but I've never had a problem where my machine completely stopped working usually after a reboot it's fine. and the crashes have gotton less frequent since I cleaned the case out with compressed air.

If you are looking for a cheap, entry level machine then yeah Acer computers aren't that bad.
