I've been subscribing to "emusic.com", amazing site for legal, non-protected, music from small indy labels. 25 cents or less a song (you get 40 downloads a month for $10US).
You won't find the latest Shakira song, but if you like jazz, blues, reggae, international, old funk and soul, and especially classical, it's great.

Here's a few of the artists whose music I've downloaded lately:

Tom Waits
Ron Sexsmith
Bob Marley
Sly and Robbie
Van Morrison
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Sam Cooke
The Staple Singers
Parliament
Duke Ellington
Miles Davis
Thelonious Monk
Sonny Rollins
John Zorn
Medeski Martin & Wood
Red Hot+Latin
Bill Evans
Vince Gueraldi (Yes the Charlie Brown music)
Ruben Blades
BossaCucaNova
Amp Fiddler
Dan Zanes
Michael Franti
Meshell Ndegeocello
Matisyahu
John Lee Hooker

I'm totally hooked on the site and may never buy anything from iTunes again. iTunes pisses me off when I can't burn a disc of the music I get from them, or play it on a non-iPod player.

1st 25 downlods are free. Oh, anyone interested in trying it *if you wanted* I can refer you and get some freebies if you sign up. PM me your email address if you're interested...

PS, what's a "CD"?

I've never downloaded music. Musical taste too eclectic, audiophile, plus those types of artists usually create an album, not just disparate tunes. Last purchases:

Burning Spear
Antony & the Johnsons
Vivaldi Vespers
Radio Tarifa
Salif Keita
Billie Holliday
Jai Uttal

I'm looking to broaden my musical horizons
i haven't bought anything recently, but I also do not download, but if I do I would pay for them legally (but not looking down on anyone who does.

but back to your question. You can go to youtube.com and find music videos there. If you hear of any bands you like on the radio, look for their videos. Usually there will be tags attached to the video such as their genre, then look up those genres and randomly watch some video music videos and see if you enjoy them.

but what type of music do you usually listen to? We may be able to recommend some similar but different types then.

Between a rock and a hard place
I seldom if ever pay for music. I used to order multiple sets of introductory offers from Columbia House without fulfilling the commitment. Lately their quality is so substandard (ie CD jewel cases crumbling, discs scratched) they aren't even worth the price of a stamp. So now I prefer to steal CD's from the portable players of unsuspecting children on buses an subways.

The last time bought a physical CD was from HMV in 2000.

Just don't see the thought of paying $12 -$15 for 1 or 2 good songs.

In my view, this is a very good post, Mr. DATYdude; and a generous offer to an interesting sounding site. For a time, I was using limewire.com for access to free music. By the way, your list of music of late shows refined taste...in my opinion. Thanks for posting this. Sincerely, Jon .

I've bought so many one song cd's that now I wait.....download, evaluate, then buy if it's good enough. I want to support a good artist, not a money grab built around one good song.
There are still some artists that I buy without downloading first, but never after just one good song.
The only drawback is that some of my favourite songs were never hits, and feel that I may miss a new favourite this way. But just sick of so many one song albums and artists.

Hammerstein

bored and sleepless again
I buy at least two Cd's a month (generally from a used store) as well as eBay
for the ones that I have trouble finding. Here is a bit of what I have bought within the last few months....

Echobelly
Crowned King
Disturbed
Mary Jane Lammond
Great Big Sea
Three Days Grace
Sarah Harmer
System of a Down
Def Leppard
Josh Ritter
The School House Rock (original ones that were on TV)
Mana
Utah Saints
Saint Germain
Spek

As for sharing musical tastes some of the music I have either downloaded or ripped from other people's Cd's.....

Juno Reactor
New Order
Enrique Iglesias
Josh Groban
Arrogant Worms
Rossini (don't ask which orchestra)
Tchaikovsky (don't ask which orchestra)
Weird Al Yankovic
Seven Nations
Mudmen
Johnny Lang
and the entire original airing of Who's on First from Abbot and Costello

all nicely stored on an external hardrive. People tell me that at over 16 000 different tunes I have to many..... I think not, Wilt Chamberlain supposedly slept with over 10 000 women and he didn't stop, so why should I

I use Bonfire for my mp3 dl purchase, about 15 - 20 songs a month, mainly 70's, 80's stuff. They actually have quite a few 80's extended mixes/remixes available, if that's your kind of thing.

Recent actual CD purchased :

Fundamental - Pet Shop Boys ( 2 disc import )
Live - Frank Marino and Mohogany Rush

My newest buy was Corinne Bailey Rae, I bought it for the one song "Put Your Records On". Wonderful!
That's a pretty damn good CD. I got it at amazon.ca on promotion. Damn shame there hasn't been that much PR done here in Canada, apart from that song or two on FLOW. Her interviews and MV's were on heavy rotations in Latin America in June.

I like this website.....

http://www.liveplasma.com/

type in a band name and it creates a web of similar bands that you might also like.

clicking on subsequent bands gives you discographies and creates new webs based on who you click. Of course you may or may not agree with the strength of the connections but neat nonetheless.

It at least gives you a starting point.

Compilation CDs are also a good way to branch out and try a bunch of new bands all at once.

If you like heavy metal I recommend the documentary Metal the reason being it traces the roots of metal and the various offshoots in doing so it creates a kind of family tree..... another good way of finding bands similar to ones that you already like or for investigating a specific genre of metal.

There is a similar website called www.Pandora.com, which I gotten into lately. It's based on the Music Genome project. You start with a song then it plays other songs similar to that one based on tonality, rythm, instrumentation. You can then fine tune your music station by giving a thumbs up or down.

The last time I bought a CD was around 2000....just before Napster got shot down....

A computer savy friend showed me Napster and after that I never bought again.....
Used to buy a ton of overpriced CDs and I figure I paid my dues to the music companies....

Why pay for it if it's legal to download music in canada? There are many files sharing services without spyware. Do a search. For me downloading music is just like plugging the old tape deck into the stereo and taping the top 10 at 10. Same concept. Just now with the internet the selection is greater. Just like taping movies on the tele. Not different at all. I hear the argument why it's illegal but I don't buy it. Unless I get a physical copy with a CD, case, and line notes I ain't stealing nothing. Artists make the money in tour anyway. Most of the revenue goes to record companies.

Companies like iTunes should charge a flat monthly not $1 a song. That's robbery! Til it becomes illegal here or til I iTunes gets real about their pricing I'm a file sharing fiend!

Two reasons, better sound quality and supporting the artists.

The key words here are Most of the revenue. I used to be a session musician filling in on guitar and yes a large percent of record sales does go to the record companies but not all. And even if its $0.25, mulitply that by 50,000 and its pretty significant.

So, if you wrote a book and people started photocopying it instead of buying it is that the same thing? Yes, some rock stars make a fortune and are richer than sin... But remember there are others that dont, such as Canadian artists.
