I was just wondering if second generation Canadians hold a grudge against, lets say fourth or fifth generation Canadians for any mistreatment their parents may have experienced when they came to Canada?

Seems this is so

As a part two to this question. My expierence has been that nearly all second generation kids I grew up with ( parents from Europe) couldn't wait to return to the homeland. Anyone else see this as well?
(BTW I'm about a 5 generation Canadian)

I would think that most successful 2nd geners couldn't give much of a damn about it beyond the tragic events of the past. Their parents were able to overcome their difficulties and make a life for their families. In my experience, most complaints/racism/etc. come from those who feel their lives should be better by some right.

This is the problem with Canada and Canadians and the reason why people like Oil whateverhisname exists - everyone concentrates on where they are 'from' instead of Canada. If you are not in this country to be Canadian, you can leave. So if the 2nd generation kids want to 'go home' - I'd say "Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. And leave your passport behind."

Rama...

Your points are well said.

But why do so manyu people say they are "__________-Canadian"?

You can fill inthe country you like, but unfortunately many people say they are from 2 places, not just Canadian.

Only the Native Indainas can claim they are truly from here. Me..my heritage is England and Scotland. I've never called myself anything other than Canadian.

I understand honouring ones heritage, but, if you're second or third generation, you are Canadian at that point.

I hate the American value of waving the flag, but I truly wish more Canadians felt the same way. There's nothing wrong with embracing the country you were born and live in.

As a 2nd Generation Canadian, I hold no grudge against people who may have given my parents a hard time regarding language/cultural integration.

Quite the contrary, I can sympathize with the fun they must have had as I am now enjoying myself in giving new immigrants to this great country the same treatment.

Consider it a hazing ritual. God bless Canada!!!

I agree. All the wannabe Irish at St Patrick's day are kinda sad IMO.

Are you serious? Look at the amount of maple leafs you see around Toronto, flying in people's yards, stickers on cars, logos on clothing. Not to mention the ubititous Canadian flag stuck on the luggage of the international Canadian traveller (what other country does that?). I've been to maybe 20 countries, and I think Canada and US take joint first place for overt displays of nationalism.

Good point frankcastle, I guess I would be 1 1/2 generation Canadian by lineage. But first, foremost and always Canadian.

I was born in British Guiana now Guyana and am white .
I went to California at 5yrs old for 2 yrs and have been in Canada overs 40 years. English is my firsst and only language.
As far as I am concerned I am more Canadian than someone 10 yrs old or 20
as I have seen the emergence of Canada and I watched the original 6 teams in the NHL and future generations can never do this so they will never be true Canadians.

How about the mistreatment dished out by the second generation's grand parents to the Canadian grandparents of the 4th or 5th generation Canadians?

The Grandparents of second generation Canadians would have hardly been able to inflict any mistreatment at all seeing how the grandparents of fourth and fifth generation Canadian were most assuredly long buried.

The grandparents of current 4th and 5th generation Canadians likely fought overseas in WWI and WWII against the grandparents of the current 2nd generation Canadians.

I'm a 2nd generation canadian, and I hold a grudge against NEW canadians from my particular ethnicity who act like complete idiots and worthless scum, and thus, indirectly paint me as scum as well

I'm talking about religious fundies, people who smell like BO 24/7, people who can't drive, people who commit crimes, etc...

I'm racist against most of my own kind, ha!
