I have an older second car that is in pretty good shape. I would like to know if there are any commercialy prepared rustproofing I can apply myself to the car.
I have a compressor and I know how to remove the door panels to get to the inside of the door. I can also easily get to the inside of the fenders. The only part I have to figure out is how to get to the rear side panels of the car. ( rear fenders in trunk area )
Some people tell me to brush on where I can and spray on commercialy prepared rust proofing. Some others suggest that I apply used engine oil as a rust proofing. Any suggestions on how to go about this project?

dont be so cheap, its $89 and they can get into places you cant.

and remember used oil is petrol based, meaning it will react with the rubber parts on your car.

It is not the cost.............

It is because i do not like the idea of drilling holes into my car. I also like to do things myself if possible.

I haven't seen any rust on me but I shower every day. Maybe my parents rust-proofed me as a kid.

Don't bother with rust proofing.

It's never been proven to be effective in preventing corrosion. Virtually every dealership tries to sell you RP, but when they apply it, it voids the factory warrantee. Why? Because the dirt and crud sticks to it. Sure, the rust proofing company then has its own warrantee, but ask yourself, what would you rather have - a factory warrantee, or a Joe Blow Rust Proofing company warrantee that will never pay out anyway.

The best thing you can do is keep your car clean and free of crud that holds moisture.

Used Engine Oil - that's gonna smeall and drip all over the damn place by the way.

if you go to a place that drills holes you are at the wrong place, here is a tip, you were wondering about the rear quarters, just rempve the tail lights virtually all cars and pick ups have access there.

You can get rustcheck in schultz can for about $40 at canadian tire. Attach the can to a schultz gun and your air compressor. There's a thicker version for underneath the car too.

Stay away from oil as it eats rubber and the drips will destroy an ashpalt driveway. Rustcheck will not disolve ashpalt.

I have to agree with the posters that said "why bother"?

Most manufacturers have a long rust through warranty nowadays and I believe some as long as 10 yrs. IF you're planning on keeping your car longer than 10 yrs then you "might" have a problem down the road but it is unlikely.

In addition, if you were worried that the manufacturer's rust prevention methods weren't good enough, you should have done the rust proofing the day the car was driven off the lot. Doing it now will just trap moisture and any corrosion causing chemicals in the car and instead of preventing corrosion, it will aid it.

This reminds me of a situation that can occur when the rust proofing is applied incorrectly. Many vehicles have drain holes in the bottom of the doors to allow water to leak out that comes in around the window seals etc. People applying rust proofing often fail to clear out these drain holes keeping the water inside the door. This accelerates the corrosion process.

IMHO and many other's, you will do more harm than good applying it. But hey, if you're dead set on doing it, don't say you haven't been warned.....
