Fantino proposed the idea of a DNA databank for people that are arrested (not convicted) of crimes.

Is this a good idea?

I feel that if a felon is convicted of a crime, the state has the right to collect DNA samples; the same way we collect fingerprints.

But,

I don't feel it's right to collect it from somebody who is arrested and not yet convicted. Although we do collect fingerprints from people that are arrested.

Would it be better to collect DNA during an arrest with the consent of the suspect? Then, make it mandatory after a conviction?

Any thoughts?

if someone is arrested, they are not necessarily guilty. If the charges are dropped or the accused is found not guilty, the lawyer of the accused usually files a motion to have all fingerprints and mugshots destroyed / erased, I guess this motion wil have to include DNA samples as well. If you are not convicted, I think that they have no business keeping a DNA sample on file.

Why not just take a DNA sample of everyone at birth???

Why not?

DNA is pretty much the only thing that is rock-solid, evidence wise. Knowing his/her DNA is on file might stop criminals from criminalizing...

Which is why taking DNA samples at birth would not be a bad idea.

Considering the cost of administrating something of that nature would be much more economical than paying for long, drawn-out trials, the chief would get my vote.

Only those with a propensity for violent crimes have anything to fear of such a database. It isn't likely that cops would go searching for DNA samples for misdemeanor crimes. Cost wouldn't be justified. Rape, child abuse, and murder cases, that's another story and a sure-fire way of getting a conviction.

As Goober said, perhaps it might keep potentially nasty criminals in line. Combine that with a reinstated death penalty and you might not see guys sitting for 20 years on death row filing appeal after appeal.

DNA sample should become LAW

Everyone in Jail and those with a "record" should be required by LAW to give a DNA sample.
How many crimes could be now solved by testing those behinds bars for other crimes? It takes to long for finger prints. But if everyone was required to supply an DNA sample at birth. The police would be able to track down those responible for a crime quickly. Anyone entering the country, should be required to give DNA now! You have no idea how many people enter Canada on a monthly basis, just want to come here due to our lax laws and if they never been finger printed how, will the cops catch them

I disagree... not everyone in jail has been convicted of a crime.
