Digital TV stations

I just read the Plasma screen question and I have one of my own.

I just bought an LCD tv (open box - got a deal) and when I first plugged it in (normal coax cable) and ran the auto channel finder, I got more stations than I was paying for, i.e. the specialty stations and what are I believe the digital stations (like digital radio), etc.

I had to return the tv for a new one (unopened) because it was crooked on its base. Here's the thing: I've been trying like crazy but I can't get those extra stations anymore. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps the last owner knew a magic setting to get the extra channels?

Did the original TV have an internal HD tuner? Perhaps it was picking up over the air HD. The new one clearly does not have an internal HD tuner.

Both tvs are exactly the same, and are hd (720p). When searching for channels I made it look for both air and cable channels. There's also 2 different coax plugs in the back of the tv which I notice makes a difference. Do you think the tv I returned might have had an extra doo-dad installed to make it capable of picking up the "air" stations? I'm wondering if the tv I returned was a demo in the store and that's why it was an "open box". Maybe the store outfitted it to pick up "air" channels?
