you can't set booktype Rom on a DVD-R.

You can only do the bitsetting on a dvd burner that supports setting bitsetting to dvd-rom. Not all DVD+R burners allow that and you may have to reflash the firmware to do that and invalidate your warranty.

as for media maxell and TDk are not the greatest, Taiyo Yuden are the best.

I'm not a technical person, but it appears to me that for most disc uses there is no real difference.

I would agree with other posters that the manufacturer's quality of work is probably more important. Verbatim often produces reliable discs in either format.

I find +R is faster to burn, but -R might be more compatible in certain older DVD players.
