I went to U of Waterloo in the 80's, and I guess a lot hasn't changed. Not the gay part, but you were lucky to get a GF at any point in your 4 or 5 year stay there. Waterloo is a technology-oriented school, and there was a 2:1 male-to-female ratio on campus in the 80's. Also, there was no love lost between the Engineering/math/science students which were overwhelmingly male, and the Arts faculty where the women were.
At least at McMaster, where I had a few friends, there were organized social events to try to bring engineering and nursing students together.
U of Toronto was a different animal. With a campus in the middle of downtown, the students all tended to go there own way and blend into the surrounding city, so that made it difficult to meet people.
Western was at the other end of the spectrum. It was unheardof to not have a GF by the end of the first semester. Due to the favourable female-to-male ratio. Also, the fact that London (like Kingston) was just a little too far from the GTA for the kiddies to go home every weekend, so there was lots of partying on the weekends. There was a survey done by Playboy magazine in the late 70's that put Western at the top of the heap in North America of the best universities to meet women.
