Diamond district

Go to the diamond district in NYC. You'll save enough to pay for the trip.

FYI

I recently was on a search for such Diamonds. I recommend not going less then S for Clarity (Rated in order VSI) or H for colour (once you hit "I" they start getting a little yello!) Go for Brilliant Cut, and size well that depends on budget.

A nice 1 carat from a wholesaler runs about $7000 CDN.

$7000

hmm $7000 bucks just for the ring to get engaged. $7000 can get me 50 massages at HFH!!! That would last me about a year, the marriage will last me about a year. I think I am better off to stay with the massages thanks!

hmm, I would suggest going to Birks or online to bluenile to find out some basic info. Any reputable store will provide you with a booklet explaining the facts! However, once purchasing the diamond I would suggest going to a wholesaler and choosing the best quality loose stone you can afford. As we all know retail makrk up is a joke. Once you purchase the stone you can have the ring designed to your liking.

7000 dollars

An engagement ring is supposed to be three months sallary. Not exactly sure why, but thats the basis to go on.

Dont go to Eatons/sears etc. The sales people are not experts.

I agree with Sara and recommend Birks, they repair all my watches and have never a problem with service or quality.

Try the polar diamonds, they are becoming top notch in the diamond industry.

conflict diamonds....

Well its all well and good to buy a diamond, one doesn't have to skimp out and refrain from buying for fear of purchasing a "blood diamond" Canadian diamonds as well as other diamonds that are properly traced can be bought. But nice try- hehe ;)

Face it boys

Glass on silver is all we need to be fooled.

But ladies seem to have an inbread sense about value.

So buy what you can afford and remember ti was not a man who came up with 3 months salary.

The Geomological Institute of America offers an on-line "how to buy a diamond" tutorial. Got to http://www.gia.org/
Select "How to buy a Diamond" from column on left. (One hint, when running the tutorial use the menu on top don't press the "tutorial" button in the middel of the page.)

This site will explain all about the 4 C's, cut, carat weight, clarity and colour. This is the basis of all diamond value.

Alternatively do a google search on "4 C's" or "four C's". You will get loads of sites returned which will explain diamond valuation.

If getting non-conflict diamonds is critical to you there is a Canadian Diamond mine called Ekati that has been producing good stones for a couple of years now. Also Rio Tinto/Aber have put their Diavik project into production in the last month. Aber will be selling Canadian branded diamonds through Tiffany's. I understand from a friend who works for one of the mining companies that the Canadian stones are of above average quality.

Actually it probably was a man, who was employed by a New York advertising agency working for DeBeers, the worlds largest diamond wholesaler. They also produced the "Diamonds are Forever" line. You are right though in the sense that it is all an advertising scam designed to give men a guilt trip. This is not a guideline. It is sales pressure.

Personally I would encourage women to look at other stones than diamonds. Unless you get a large, high-quality stone (read very expensive) they really aren't the prettiest of gems IMNSHO. The price of diamonds was controlled by a cartel and is now controlled by DeBeers. The price is artificially inflated by controlling supply on the retail market. DeBeers is in deep trouble with the US government for violating anti-trust legislation (and has been for years) and no executive of the company can enter that country without being arrested.

A gemologigyst once told me that diamonds are usually flawed over 1/3 karat. Now I remember reading 25 years ago or more that flawed diamonds have little or no REAL value. Yet people pay thousands for diamonds with fishers and air bubbles.

Shows what good strong price controls and advertising will do.

Be wise

Buy a really great diamond and have a really great attorney put a prenuptial together for you. The first should help with the second.

you would be a "birk" (english slang) if you bought a diamond at Birk`s. Nyc diamond district is the best place and worth the drive.
I hope she is worth it.

Never buy a diamond from a big name like Birks unless you got money to blow. Going to New York is NOT worth it. You are going to get hit with so much taxes at the border (25% in total) that you could go for a much bigger and better diamond. Unless you want to smuggle the ring in. But why go through all the hassle when somebody here has already done it for you. (I am assuming you're in TO) Plus it's always nice to have a place you can go back to easily in case there is someting wrong or something has to be changed on the ring. There are plenty of "small" jewellers here in Toronto that can give you the same price and service. The diamond industry (like everything else) has gotten so competitive in the last few years and the public has gotten so much more knowledge as a result of the internet that no jeweller is stupid enough to try and rip you off.
Then there are the wholesale dealers that have started to sell to the public (mainly at 27 and 55 Queen street East, the two main jewellery buildings in Toronto) but you need to know someone to get in. The security is high for obvious resons and you can't just walk in off the street.

Do your research on the net so you know what you're in for (the 4cs and so on) then PM me. After 15 years in wholesale I have a "few" connections.

Papa Smurf, think about it what exactly do you buy that is really worth the money you pay for it. A fancy car, a $3000 suit, a new computer even a $30 pair of jeans. You lose money on everything as soon as you pay for it. The price of everything is controlled by supply and demand and created by advertising. The market for diamonds is so well controlled by DeBeers around the world that the prices NEVER come down. The quality that is being sold comes down but the price NEVER.

Buy a diamond from a good source and it will ALWAYS remain a good investment. It is always money.

Who would be foolish enough to declare a diamond ring at the border.!! Such a small item would be easy to hide. How many people know someone that is in the jewellery business.!! If the gentleman that posted this question knew someone, he would not have asked the question in the first place.
The prices in NYC are alot better even with the exchange rate, granted not everyone can hop on a plane and go to NYC.

anyone here ever use Diamonds For Less at 5 shuter street in the eaton centre area? they are a wholesaler. large selection and good prices. you can tell them what you're looking for in terms of the 4Cs and they likely have something in stock for you. they will also do custom designs. i've bought there a few times.
