That is the standard practice in Europe though. That is how they protect breeding stock. Over here they give animals birth control, which my guess, European morals find that unacceptable.
The best preference is probably to send the animals to a compatible Zoo that could use the breeding stock, but it all comes down to separate breeding stock. And as far as kids seeing that with parents permission, maybe they learn something.
