Dell confirmed for us that it is no longer making consumer netbooks (the business-aimed Latitude netbooks are still available on Dell.com). Not only are the Inspiron Minis being put in the grave, but the company confirmed for us that it will not be releasing new netbooks based on Intel's forthcoming Cedar Trail platform. In other words, it is done with the category.

Dell's Marketing Director Alison Gardner was very clear about the strategy: "Thin and powerful is where it is at for us."
Who remembers everyone screaming Apple had to make netbooks? I do.

Thin and powerful, huh? Sounds like a Macbook Air, you know that that flop that's just a niche product. LOL.

^^^ Nope, netbooks are still around starting at ~$200, capable of doing far far more than iPads....:eyebrows:

I still use my netbook just because it can do more (e.g. I made it to tri-boot OSX Tiger, UBUNTU distro and Tiny XP) but the general public don't care... all they want is tablets esp. iPad. Netbooks are not in fashion anymore.

WOW!
That just PROVES how much more versatile netbooks are, plus you have Flash, compared to severely limited but pricey iPads.

It's all about slick fancy marketing than impresses the pants off members in the iCult...:eyebrows:

Oh you know and I know, it's not about marketing. c'mon. it's about different needs. most people consume. and they'd like to do it sitting on their sofa. a tablet format is easier to hold. of course, it's not as powerful as a netbook. doesn't matter. web and email are fine. facebook works. that'll be enough. so that makes two manufacturers (HP and now Dell) to avoid like the plague. who's next?

You'll never get WP to admit that. In any case, WP doesn't know squat about what he's yapping. Only a fool would not realize that both of those items are built for different markets. Frankly, I think that most people realize that netbooks are pretty limited in their use and that tablets serve their needs better.

Of course Netbooks are limited and for this reason many prefer a real laptop or PC.
That said, ridiculously OVERPRICED iPads are FAR MORE limited than Netbooks.
Only a fool or a iCultist punch drunk on Apple iJuice would deny that!....

Amazing, the more WP yaps, the more he proves my points.

but lets admit it. if you don't think it's cool to have an ipad, nobody will buy it.

I actually like netbooks, four fucking wheels & steering wheel...ultrabooks are for girls who like to show off, or the limp-wristed.

tablets are quirky marketing-whore-jailed novelty...fuck that, I can trick out a netbook with whatever lightweight Linux I want and get down to business.

oh yeah, and Dell could probably care less about selling to Dick & Jane...they sell so many god damn workstations & servers to small business...their monitors suck, pixels or columns of pixels die fairly quick, but their boxes seem to be fine...aside from a few which I have seen with front panel USB issues.
