An interesting case. What if the girl lied, and what if this chap is totally innocent. Do the mother and father know. I think this happens more than we'd like to admit. On the other hand, if he's got a good lawyer that's willing to lie for him or a creative, yet very sick mind, they should cut off his coconuts and feed him to the crocodiles....

Defence says girl motivated to make up stalking allegations over family's unpaid debt

CALGARY -- The Calgary teen claiming she was stalked by an obsessive family "cousin" was motivated to lie because her parents owed him money, his lawyer said yesterday.
And defence counsel Gloria Froese said the girl was also able to use her allegations against the accused as an excuse for work tardiness.
But the Crown countered the man's status as a family friend and relative allowed him to surreptitiously stalk the girl and sexually assault her on two occasions.
The 36-year-old man faces seven charges, including assault with a weapon, a syringe, for his dealings with the girl in 2007, when she was 14.
Crown prosecutor Eric Tolppanen told Justice Jo'Anne Strekaf she should convict the accused on all seven charges.
Tolppanen said there was nothing to indicate the girl was asked by her family to accuse the man of criminal behaviour to avoid an outstanding debt.
"There's no evidence of any pressure placed upon her by the family to fabricate something horrible happening to her," he said.
Among the allegations by the teen was the accused brought her to his downtown apartment after picking her up from work and insisting she come inside for a tour, where he attempted to rape her.
She also said he threatened to stab her with syringe containing infected blood when he stopped her on the street and she refused to talk to him, and he wanted to run away and marry her.
But Froese said the girl's testimony was rife with inconsistencies and she was motivated to lie because the accused had paid the family's rent for the first three months of 2007, and wanted to be reimbursed.
"The entire syringe allegation and ... the different versions she gave are not consistent and that is enough for the court to have a reasonable doubt," said Froese.
The accused said he broached the subject of reimbursement on three occasions with the girl's mother, only to be brushed off.
Strekaf will hand down a verdict on Oct. 14.
