This is from an article in the Ottawa Citizen:

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 300 employees and has the following statistics:

30 have been accused of spousal abuse
9 have been arrested for fraud
14 have been accused of writing bad checks.
95 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
4 have done time for assault
55 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
12 have been arrested on drug related charges
4 have been arrested for shoplifting
16 are currently defendants in lawsuits
62 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year
Can you guess which organization this is?

It is the 301 MP's in the Canadian Parliament. The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws designed to keep the rest of us in line. Which one did you vote for?

Okay Quest, you have my attention. How about a link to the article in question, so we can read it? I don't have much confidence in politicians, but quite frankly, I don't buy the stats you are putting out for us. Overall, it is a stunning collection of facts. But lets look at it a little more closely....62 arrested for drunk driving: how many convicted? Frankly, I just don't believe it. 14 accused of bad cheques, 9 arrested of fraud; isn't writing a bad cheque fraud? Hey, I bounced a cheque by mistake about 25 years ago. I guess I could be accused of it too. Twelve arrested on drug related charges...so what? The drug laws in this country are ludicrous. Eleven defendents in law suits? So some crazy person wants a piece of them. Is that their fault?

So, it is somewhat shocking, what you are saying, I admit. They really are a sleazy bunch aren't they, starting with our man at the top, Jean Chretien. But my point is that when you really examine the stats you give, they don't really say that much. Unless there really is more to the story that you are not telling us.

This is misleading.

Only these two items are criminal. The rest are accusations and arrests without convictions. As far as the two crimes above are concerned, the assault convictions are lower than the proportion for the general population. The DWI arrests are, sadly, a valid criticism.

Hey! I'm right there with all of you when it comes to bashing politicians. But I don't appreciate misleading statements like the article quoted above. It is clearly designed to make us feel negative thoughts for politicians and it uses what appear to be shocking stats to do it.

So what if 30 have been accused of spousal abuse?? How many actually did the crime? We don't know!!

"95 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses." Give me a break! "Indirectly" could mean anything...like they owned a mutual fund that invested in a business that went broke!

I have no love for politicians as a group but I hate being manipulated by the media even more.

Interesting...

Did the Ottawa Citizen really print that crap or was that part of the joke?

(I'm not sure which answer would be better)

62 arrested for drunk driving in the last year?

After the BC premier received so much publicity for his little lapse does anyone honestly believe that we wouldn't have heard about 62 MP's being arrested in the last year. C'mon .

Consider the source here .

PT Barnum would be chuckling .

Darn, I was hoping to fan some flames and see what happened before I fessed up, but you caught on too quickly. The post does prove that just because it is in print doesn't make it true.
