A former Toronto convenience store owner who scammed a customer out of a lottery ticket worth $5.7 million will spend a year in jail, an Ontario court ruled Tuesday.

Hafiz Malik, 63, pleaded guilty to the charge last December.

The crime occurred in June 2004, when customer Lorraine Teicht came to Malik's Dupont Street store to check a ticket she had purchased with her co-workers.

Instead of telling the woman about the huge jackpot, Malik instead said the ticket was worth $10. He then kept hold of the ticket himself and claimed the winnings in January 2005.

After claiming the winnings, Malik moved from a small apartment to a large home in Mississauga. He also purchased expensive cars, including a Mercedes and a Land Rover.

The fraud was discovered after Teicht's friends investigated the matter and then passed it on to the Ontario Provincial Police.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. paid out Teicht's friends and gave them $800,000 in interest. However, the 56-year-old Teicht passed away from cancer in April.

Crown prosecutors had asked that Malik spend two-and-a-half years in jail, but the defence asked for a conditional sentence because Malik is remorseful.

Exactly. You get much more time for an armed robbery, even if you only walk away with a few dollars.

It's so sad that the woman who won passed away before she saw this sentence come down. I wonder if she ever saw a dime from the win? Thank goodness the friends decided to look into the matter!

The moral of the story IS check your own tickets. And sign your tickets. And fill out the back of the tickets. Know which numbers you played. And when you have lost on a ticket...take it with you anyways, don't dispose of it in their trash, but if you do make sure it is torn up.

A year's sentence is a joke for stealing five million dollars.

Oh yeah I remember this piece of shit. What it doesnt say is that he ruined the rightful winner's life. Her friends turned against her because they thought she scammed them and she died a little while ago, broke and broken.

And this piece of shit is "sorry"...

Fuck me, let me off this planet.

The thief had a lot going for him. Most places that share a lottery ticket either get a copy or see a copy of the ticket posted on a company bulletin board. The machine generally is oriented to show the client the winning value of the ticket but the woman didn't look. The guy waited 6 months and nobody raised the alarm. What I'm curious about is how did her friends finally raise the alarm? Even if she plays the same numbers - who looks back to see if they ever come up for a friend or relative over the past year ?

Usually the fraud is uncovered pretty quickly. I remember a store owner stoled the winning ticket from his niece who was working in his store. Since the girl could prove that she played the same numbers every week and they all had a special meaning that she could explain, the store owner's lucky chance excuse wasn't enough and he lost the ticket and was charged.

That's a recent thing. This happened in 2004 when apparently fraud by lottery vendors was somewhat common. All you heard was the chime, you could not see the screen for yourself.

Yes, so he would say that she won $10 as a result of the chimes being heard, not knowing he was pocketing the real ticket.

I don't know how they realized the ticket had won, however there is a feature on their website where you can check if you numbers ever came up in the past. One of her co - workers may have done this if they used the same numbers all the time and this would have told them when the numbers were drawn.

From what I remember the chime didn't sound....Maybe it was broken and the store owner didn't get it fixed for obvious reasons...

The numbers were regular numbers that the group was using for years....So the co-workers suspected something was wrong and they had been cheated....

I think one of the group actually hired a private investigator to actually investigate the woman who was responsible for the ticket but the P.I. found out it was the store owner who scammed the group...One thing led to another and the storeowner was charged and sentenced and actually owes the Canadian Govt money....

I think the co-workers received their rightful winnings before the woman's death....

You guys, I believe that when there is a really BIG win, there are no chimes that sound? I heard this somewhere...that the maching basically shuts down, and the OLG calls the store where the machine is located, with instructions on how to proceed. I could be wrong in this, but I am sure I heard this somewhere.

Anyone else hear that no chimes sound when there is a huge win?

I don't know if that is true or not, but I remember seeing on the news a couple of years ago somebody won a big jacktop and went to a gas station or something to check their ticket.. it was a newer machine with a screen the customer can see. The amount, whatever it was, say $30,000,000 flashed up on the screen apparently.
