When I got my goods rung up, and handed them my photo Mastercard, I was asked for photo ID to accompany it.

In theory, this is probably a good practice but I think that the checkout process is already too slow as it is and this will slow it down more. For example, I was at a Canadian Tire store and this guy in front of me was messing around with his cash and Canadian Tire "money". Instead of wasting time with the Canadian Tire "money" just deduct 2% from the sales price would be fine with me and faster checkouts as well. Now don't get me started on mail-in rebates.

Just like Moraff, I write "Ask for Photo ID" on the back of my card. Amazingly, I am hardly ever asked to show it, but it's getting more common that they do.
BTW, I was in an Ontario casino and they had a big sign saying that they would not accept any credit cards that were not signed. This included my card. So now I both sign the card and write ask for photo ID.

If anything, I'd be more willing to shop at a store that take fraud seriously..

i was not asking about the cardholder agreement... I was asking if merchant agreement allowed this.

It is a brand new card, signature is clear.

I don't think I should have to show photo ID to use my card... so I will not shop there again.

It may not be in the Mastercard agreement, but the merchant services company I have used requires that you ask to verify photo id whenever its a face to face transaction. When I have time I will look for the agreement and post it here.

I don't have a photo on my credit card yet, but for years instead of signing the back of my credit card I have written "Ask for Photo ID".

I have no problem with a merchant making darn sure it's me before charging my credit card.

IMO you overreacted.

I do the same thing. It protects me and Visa, so there is less fraud and less for them to write off as losses. They should always ask for ID, IMHO.

I had a similar experience in a Best Buy store... they could not read the "security digits" on the back of the card, and would not accept the CC for payment, even with ID!!!
