You may want to try replacing it yourself.

1. Go to autowrecker and remove an old alternator from a car the same model as your own.

2. Remember how you uninstalled it so it will be easier to install it on your own vehicle.

3. If you do not have some tools, borrow some from your neighbours.

4. Take off the muffler and throw the old air filter in the washing machine to clean

5. Remove the radiator and soak it in vinegar and javex

6. Remove the carburator and clean it thoroughly with some steel wool and dish soap

7. Take out the spark plugs using a chisel and hammer - They break apart rather easily

8. Using a sledge hammer, pound on the top of the engine for several minutes to shake loose any rust or dead leaves

9. Fill the windshield cleaner container with oil and dried chives

10. If you notice any leaks on the engine block, plug them up with quick drying cement

11. Put everything back they way it was before

Enjoy driving around knowing that you saved approximately $300.

alternator!

The price can run around 300+, if you buy at a dealer it cost that much and you get a year warranty. The best would be canadian tire you get 2 yr warranty!

Cost me 275 in Burlington about 6 or 7 years ago for an 81 Caddy luckily the old one was still under warranty. Had a gas tank that caught something in the road on the 401 over labor day weekend a year after that and it only cost me 300 counting labor, for a whole new tank i couldnt believe it . It just cost me 200 to put a fuel pump in the same tank.

If you are not a mechanic, go to a reputable store. The labour will cost more than the alternator, and they will probably find something that needs replacing, fixing.

It doesn't matter if it is the V6, or the I4 motor. In both cases it is an easy fix. The cheapest way to fix it has been mentioned earlier, that is, go to the junkyard and purchase one off a wreck. I bought one for $60, including core charge about a year ago for my 280,000 km Chev Beretta.

Buying a Bosch from Canadian Tire will set you back about $200.

1. Unplug the battery using an 8mm wrench. If you have an anti theft radio, you may have to get the new code from the dealer to reset it so it will operate again.

2. Loosen the serpentine belt. Use an 18 mm wrench or a 3/8 drive johnson bar if you can get it in there to increase the tension on the idler pulley so that you can release tension on the belt.

2. Disconnect all wiring to the alternator. There is usually one plug, and one live feed bolted on the rear of the alternator with a 10mm bolt.

3. Disconnect the bolts holding the alternator on. Typically held on with a combination of 10mm 13mm and 15mm bolts.

4. Remove and replace alternator and reverse steps 1 through 3.

It is an easy job that can be done in your driveway with basic metric tools. No need to see a mechanic if you are slightly handy.

If you decide you would rather someone else do it, an honest mechanic labour should only be charging for .5 hours.
