I had to delete the thread, I mixed Alma Mahler's story with that of Irene Sendler. It was Irene Sendler who helped Jews escape Nazi Germany then ended up a concentration camp. She smuggled children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and would later be awarded the title Righteous Among Nations by the young State of Israel. She also gained the Order of The White Eagle, Poland's highest honour.
Upon further review Alma Mahler is considered a monster who hastened Gustav's death. She married three times and had numerous lovers. Among them composer Alban Berg and novelist Thomas Mann. She escaped Austria after the Nazi Occupation, then her and her third husband walked across the Pyrenees into Spain and boarded a ship for New York at Lisbon. Her third husband did not survive WW II.
