Maybe we should contract out city halls jobs get rid of the overpaid councillors, with their staff all making over $100 k not to mention the retirement package and the other perks that go with the job. Trips, meals, expense accounts, lawyers fees paid to protect them from scrutiny, pensions of the like that we can only dream of. Plus the best one is they vote in their own raises.

This is what we are all looking to get rid of "The Real Gravy Train"
We also save on elections and if they are doing a terrible job we can get rid of them in a heartbeat, plus we can see where the money really goes.

100 k is not overpaid, not even close.

The most I would say is that there are too many of them.

If you think you can do better, you are free to run for office yourself.

The councillors are the most important part of municipal government, they represent the people. You want those who are unaccountable to make decisions?

I can see cutting the numbers to match the federal and provincial ridings, slashing their budgets and not being allowed to vote for raises. Let them pay for their own French and speech lessons as well.

If he's willing to go to school to learn another language, spend his time studying, good for him (or her).

As someone who has been studying French for work purposes, I can assure you, it is not easy. It's a lot of work.

(And the corporation I used to work for would gladly pay my tuition by the way - as do most).

Learning French means they have ambitions for higher office, let them pay for it themselves.

If I wanted to learn French to run for politics, I'd have to pay for the costs myself, why should they get another advantage over me?

Are you able to use it on a daily basis? If not... your'e doomed to study it forever. Studying can lay the groundwork for learning, but learning happens when you're sitting across a table struggling to find the words and feeling pretty good because you can actually make out 70% of what's being said.
