City council has voted in favour of a solid waste budget that will see the cost of garbage bins rise by an average of 58 per cent.

Ward 2 Coun. Rob Ford had been calling on his colleagues to vote against the move, which he said would “unfairly burden” taxpayers, but on Wednesday morning council decided to ignore Ford’s pleas and approve the proposed budget and accompanied fee increase.

The revised structure for garbage bins will now require homeowners to fork over an extra $3.91 a year for a small bin (total cost $10.63), $32.64 for a medium bin (total cost $88.73), $91 for a large bin (total cost $247.39) and $126.39 for an extra-large bin (total cost $343.60).

And there he was all throughout the campaign berating Olivia Chow as a 'tax and spend' socialist NDP mayoral candidate who will blastoff taxes to the moon and beyond.

He is who he has asked voters to reject.

The only difference is that he was not forthright and honest during campaign and has demonstrated a 'smoke and mirrors', shell game, now you see it, now you don't approach in managing his responsibilities as mayor and accountability to the public.

If he was not honest and forthright during the campaign, why would anyone believe he would be anything else but that now and in the future.

Why are you blaming Tory for this?
Directly from your post: "City council has voted in favour of a solid waste budget"

When Fatty privatized garbage collection and allegedly saved tons of money, was there a tax cut for homeowners? Didn't think so, troll.

Wow... Tory must really be a magician to 'orchestrate' city council.
If you give him THAT much credit, he definitely deserves to be Mayor.

So council doesn't ignore Tory the way they ignore Ford?

Tory sounds like a mayor. Unlike Ford, who couldn't get a dog to follow him.

Now only if he would adopt that very business-like approach to 'the car'.

However in Johnny's Toronto, any form and funding of transit and mobility must not interfere with 'the car'.

Boo, can you think of any reason why people SHOULDN'T pay for their bins?

Sounds right.
Can you think of any reason why people, with the exception of the emperor's ministers, shouldn't complain 58% fee increase on government basic service?

Dogs normally have an excellent sense of smell. The stench of a crack addict is horrible and would normally send them running.

I guess the Boo breed of lapdog has had theirs stifled somehow, since anyone with a lick of sense, smell or otherwise would have ran from the abuser long ago.

Boo, can you think of any reason why people SHOULDN'T pay for their bins?

Sounds right.
Because for all the years I lived here, garbage collection was included in my property taxes. A few years ago, they got the brilliant idea of charging people on their water bills for garbage collection.

Did my property taxes then decrease by a corresponding amount??

No

It was just an innovative way to grab more cash.

So then they contracted out garbage collection in order to save the city millions. Which it has. Last I read, it was something like an 11.5 million dollar saving per year by contracting out garbage collection in the west only.

So, if the cost of garbage collection has actually DECREASED, it begs the question, "how come they are increasing garbage collection fees by 58%?"

Obviously, it's just another cash grab. They don't want to be seen as increasing property taxes too much (they are already increasing at a rate double that of inflation), so they go after garbage fees.

It's bullshit and everyone knows it.

You live in a condo (or used to before you moved to the states) so your garbage collection would have been by private hauler and it would have been included in your condo fees and it would not be increasing by 58% I think it's safe to say. So this city of Toronto cash grab doesn't apply to you. Easy for you to pontificate.
