Computer Screws

Over the past few years I've added hardware into empty slots in my tower. I added a network card, extra USB ports, among other things.

Every time I install a new card, the ##^$$@#%^% package does not include a screw for mounting the card into the computer. Now, I've taken the screws from the back of the computer securing the case to the body, but I'm running out of screws. I went to The Source, Best Buy and Futureshop and none of them had packages of screws for the computer!!

Any idea where I can get a hold of these things? Best Buy recommended Home Depot but I couldn't find the right thing there either.

Buy a Mac - the extra screws are there right where you need them. :)

Or try Active Surplus on Queen, East of Spadina. I would think a lot of these little stores where you can custom build computers would likely have screws as well.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Bring one with you to Home Depot, and try the different thread sizes to match. It doesn't have to have the same head.

Otherwise try Brafasco, they specialize in all types of screws, bolts, etc.

Have you tried a local computer sale/service shop? I've often been able to get things like mb standoffs or case screws from the service guys. Usually free, or a very small charge.

Ditto.

Logic Computer has a box filled with screws at the service desk which I've harvested from time to time for fasteners.

They are specialty screws, so going to a computer repair shop is the right place to start. The screws for Hard Drives (#6-32 x 3mm) are different than the ones for Optical Drives (M3 x 5mm Pan Head Phillips), and different again from Case screws. The threading isn't the biggest issue: the length is. And if your Hard Drive manufacturer put sensitive components just inside the screw holes, a too-long screw could damage it.

Startech.com does have packs of 50 (I bought at $3.29 for a pack of 50 but the store has since closed), so the shop might charge you some sort of fee even for small quantities.

Of course, to contradict me, the startech.com website lists #6-32 x 1/4" screws "for mounting any I/O application or completing your PC chassis."

Nothing like being screwed. Sorry you didn't get any.

Now, if you had a screw of misc boxes that would be more exciting.
