They bought the A Channels out west and have changed the name of some of their stations. Those in Toronto, Winnipeg,Calgary & Edmonton are CityTV while many of the smaller cities' stations are A Channels.

A while before Moses Znaimer left, CHUM and all those other tv and radio stations were completely bought up by the Waters family who even before then controlled a good chunk of the company. Since Znaimer left they've been rebranding and reorganizing the entire CHUM Limited organization to really make it theirs so that when anyone from the outside takes a look they'll only say "Oh, the Waters family did that!" and not think of the reputation and soul that it used to have.

Supposedly the Waters family has someone related to them in every department and on every floor which includes sons, daughters, nephews, nieces and cousins, almost all who have no tv or radio background at all.

CHUM: Corporate rebranding

You're right - CHUM is a corporate, boring, by-the-rulebook organization who will suck the life of just about anything. Moses Znaimer may have been an egotistical little prick, but he created vibrant, inexpensive, effective local television - the button-down businessmen from CHUM don't give a flying fuck about radio OR television — just about making a big bottom line for their owners.

In the end, with luck, the ratings will fall. The current owners don't have VISION, and for sure Znaimer had that. Soon, CITY/CHUM or whatever they call it will be as dull, predictable, and miserably suburban as, say, Global ot CTV.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Almost like Rogers with the Jays, they own the team, and also the radio and tv station that carry them. Overkill on Rogers advertising, and a monopoly on Cable TV rates.

It really irks me that they changed the name to Rogers Centre, there are enough Centre's around already, what was wrong with Rogers Skydome.

I just happened to see the 'A Channel', i took a second take then i read the posts on Terb. When did the switch happen? Maybe i just didn't notice. And I'm looking at both newscasts, CityNews and The A Channel, they look very cold and Americanized... quite a change from the orange and yellow tones of the previous 'environments'.

Too bad, I grew up with City... I'd hate to see it turn into another formulaic American machine. They might as well get rid of the name 'CityTV' as it will no longer reflect the energy of the city but of our neighbours to the south.

How long was the NewVR the "New" VR anyways?

There is a new building on the 400 near Vaughan Mills with A-Channel on it

I saw another new channel when flipping around today - Razor TV. Anyone know what that one is all about and where it's from?
Razor is not new. It's the old MTV Canada that Chum bought. They didn't want to pay Viacom anymore to licence a canadian MTV, so they just moved all the MTV shows over to Much Music and re-named it Razor.

Where was the CRTC when all this was happening? isn't it there job stop this kinda stuff?

I caught a bit of the A Channel a while back in Alberta.. and on satelite.. I thought it was a decent channel

City may have started in Toronto.. however they did have many "City" stations in Canada, the USA and I was surprised to see that they had a station in Bogota when I was there.

I miss channel 79, 57, City Limits & Rocket Robin Hood!

CityTV is tired...

It USED to be innovative, edgy and vibrant....but it hasn't been for a long time. Just watch some of the old broadcasts that they run late at night, 'Rewind'. The look and feel of the news, anchors and station hasn't changed in 20 years. Their 'no anchor desk' format was a departure from all the other news shows back in the 80's and some of what they did back then was 'new' but City just isn't the same. I don't think it has to do with Znaimer the egomanic 'letting go'; I just think they rested on their laurels of being 'hip, cool and oh-so Queen Street' and didn't keep up with what was and is happening around them.

Many did copy the formula they made famous but part of that formula is coming up with a new formula from time to time. Oh and the new blue colour reminds me of Toronto1.......the 'other' urban station in Toronto (with hotter babes!!)
