No one knows exactly what the Star of Bethlehem was. However, we do know the ancients associated the planet Saturn with the Jews, and Jupiter with kingship. A conjunction 2000 years ago would have suggested to Persian Magi that a king of the Jews was about to be born.

Saturn and the Jews
Jupiter orbits the Sun once every 11.862 Earth years, Saturn in 29.4571.
29.4571/ 11.862 = 2.483. I'll round to 2.5, for simpler math.
Two Saturn years and five Jupiter years are 59 Earth years, give or take a few months. Since both Jupiter and Saturn orbit in the same direction, and on the same plane, they'll have a conjunction, (the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn are in a straight line, relative to each other) three times every 59 years, +/- months, every time Jupiter 'laps' Saturn.
What makes this particular Jupiter/ Saturn conjunction noteworthy is the timing of the event, (at the Winter Solstice, (fewest daylight hours of the year, north of the Equator), and the favourable position of Earth, relative to Jupiter. The Earth can be pretty much anywhere in its orbit, when Jupiter and Saturn are aligned with the Sun.

Saturn and the Jews
Since JC never sat on the throne or held any kind of office nor authority I fail to see the connection between his birth, that may or may not have happened around that time.
In Mark's Gospel, when asked directly if He is King of the Jews by Pilate, Christ answers in the affirmative. That's good enough for me. Truth himself speaks truly, or else there's nothing true. There are Kings who ,for whatever reason, are not allowed to rule, but they are still Kings.

When he's born is never stated in the gospels and people have pointed out that shepherds tending to their flock would imply it not being winter. (But winters were mild, so it isn't a sure thing)
