Looks like Pelosi, Bwawney, and the usual suspects are promising a bunch of new great jobs. They have had control of congress for 4 years now and their policies have driven our economy off of a cliff. We will see what kind of damage this bill provides when prices start rising.

interesting, this issue has been on the go for the better part of 20 years now, and it hits the floor of congress 6 weeks before an election.......

The big question is Will the US have the nerve to play chicken with the country that holds most of the bonds they have issued? It could get messy and American consumers are now used to their 19.99 toasters and Video players.

LMAO, it's all about political grand standing/posturing. No different from some American politicians grand standing on "dirty" Canadian Oil Sands.

The Americans probably have the heaviest armed force in the world but the Chinese are not just another "road kill" to be steamrolled. At least not yet considering the following,

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...stan-bombs-to-china-s-neodymium-monopoly.html

The Chinese will appreciate the RMB (funny many White people still stick to the term Yuan) because of the necessity and they will do it sequentially, over time say in the coming 20 years. They will tweak the speed and the scale when needed, not by some American career politicians desperate to get re-elected once in every 2 years and the Xenophobic Americans from the left and right.

Please stop this tirade about US politics. Being an "american" myself, I come here to the best forum of the "Great North" to escape the stupidity for a while.
The chink :) in the Chinese armour is the fact that the RMB is a controlled currency. The RMB will never be a great currency ala. Euro or the US Dollar because it is not free. Only a currency which is allowed to float freely on the market will be considered a safe harbour. It's quite obvious that China is a blatant currency manipulator, and the only reason why they haven't been punished before is because they are the second largest economic force on the planet. China needs to understand that they are one of the big boys now. They need to play by the big boys rules.
Until that happens, they will continue to get no respect.
It's not xenophobia, it's the reality that people expect great things from great powers.
And so far China plays like a fat adolescent boy, bullying to get it's way.

The chink in the Chinese armour is the fact that the RMB is a controlled currency.
LMAO, are you sure this is not the equivalent of six letters n-word? ;)

The RMB will never be a great currency ala. Euro or the US Dollar because it is not free.
I wouldn't go that far to suggest either the Euro or the Uncle Sam as great currencies since the Euro is pretty "synthetic" and do not have the same reputation like the old Deutschmark.

As for the Uncle Sam, well, it's just an extremely liquid fiat currency not convertible into pre-set, fixed quantities of gold. Not going to be surprised to hear the USD has the same potency comparable to opium or crack for "addicts" like hmm...the rest of the world.

Only a currency which is allowed to float freely on the market will be considered a safe harbour.
Again not so sure the meaning for safe harbour. Do you mean safe harbour for carry trade?

It's quite obvious that China is a blatant currency manipulator, and the only reason why they haven't been punished before is because they are the second largest economic force on the planet.
True but wrong reason. They don't get "punished" because the Chinese are savvy enough to protect themselves, ie they don't let the RMB convertible for speculators like the hedge fund managers to destabilize the financial system for the sake of 2/20 or something.

BTW, the US is also a blatant currency manipulator, namely making Uncle Sam worth-less in order to "wipe out" the real value of the enormous debts they put themselves six feet under, without making hard choices to cut the entitlements and raise the taxes.

China needs to understand that they are one of the big boys now. They need to play by the big boys rules.
Maybe for 300 million Chinese (comparable to the US population) but there are still 1 billion or so of their "comrades" are having living standards comparable to those in the big chunk of Africa.

Until another US population came out of the poverty level, China does not see big upside to act like the big boys. As least not another 5 to 10 years or so.

Plus, it costs too much money and maintenance to live up one. Let the Americans fund the big chunk of the cost to be big boys.

Until that happens, they will continue to get no respect.
They will continue to get no respect after they caved in to all the American immediate demands, if ever. Americans will look for another way to squeeze the Chinese and see how well the Americans could gain from the Chinese caving in.

It's not xenophobia,
Not Xenophobia in the sense that not that many supremacists or neo-nazis to attack the visible minorities since many ABCs are considered "model minority" when compared to other groups.

That doesn't stop some xenophobic Americans to demand their Senators or congressmen passing resolutions or laws to sabotage trade between the 2 countries.

it's the reality that people expect great things from great powers.
Again as mentioned, many Americans see strategic, competitive threats from "great power" like China that undermine the Americans global dominance for century. Not going to be surprised many average Joes and Janes do not consider the Chinese as their kind of people.

And so far China plays like a fat adolescent boy, bullying to get it's way.
Are you sure? The fat adolescent boy you describe sounds like one-third of the American population who enjoy themselves too much at the McDonalds of the world.

Having said that, don't worry about the mainland Chinese. They learn vice like this from the Americans very well and they are getting there, albeit not as quick as the Americans demanding RMB appreciation like now.

The chinese are just shooting themselves in the foot with this policy. I won't bother explaining why that would be the case since most people who visit terb don't care to read detailed treatises on currency policy.

With their mercantilist policy the chinese leadership gets to

a. control who gets what loans, and on what terms,
b. control foreign flows of funds into the country
c. absorb the lower skilled workers in the countryside into cities
d. amass a vast treasure chest of dollars with which they can buy influence in their geopolitical neighbourhood, secure long term supplies of resources in places like Africa, and even gain some leverage on US policy (as chinese savings are funding the american recovery effort).

The biggest losers of this policy: chinese consumers, whose wages are being suppressed and their purchasing power undermined with an unnaturally cheap yuan. Also, those sectors othe chinese economy which are not favoured with cheap loans; the less politically connected, people on the 'outside' but with better ideas than the pampered nomenclatura who have all the pull and the plum jobs.

Bwawney, you are a worthless pos. You ruined our economy with your government manipulation of the housing market and you have accelerated job losses with your anti-business policies.

So what's your alternative? Another Japan "lost decade" 10x the magnitude for the Chinese to pay the steep price for irresponsible spending and speculation by Caucasians, Anglo-Saxons in particular, with the African-Americans in the mix?

Sounds like you believe the Chinese are that stupid to repeat the same mistake by the Japanese in the late 80s.

LOL, this is written by an author who works for a hedge fund company founded by somebody used to work for George Soros.

http://www.induscap.com/about_us.php

You do not need a rocket scientist to figure out it's their vested interest to paint the situation as dire and bleak as the worst case scenario, while figure out arbitrage opportunity to consistently extracted positive returns from both the long and short side.

Shorting China without barriers and having RMB convertible like right now could well be the dream ticket to get their 2/20 returns in billions.

Looking forward to seeing Obamao demanding mortgage free homeowner to be a patriot and do the right thing by pitching in for money to fix the mess.
