China is working hard to shape public opinion in Africa, but its more lasting impact could be on the infrastructure of media itself

The call came from the Chinese embassy. During a video meeting in March Joe Biden had warned Xi Jinping of “consequences” if China provided material support to Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. But China wanted readers in Africa to get their version. Xinhua, the official news service, supplies content free to many African media outlets. It made sure the story was available in time for Tanzanian deadlines. A Chinese diplomat alerted news outlets to the case, according to one journalist. The diplomat said the story was “important” to them.

At least one newspaper, the Citizen, used Xinhua’s story. Readers did not see any hint of a warning from Mr Biden. Instead they read Mr Xi’s admonition that nato should talk to Russia to meet “the security concerns” of Russia and Ukraine. (They also learned that “China stands for peace and opposes war”.) America’s message was presented as deferential by comparison. Xinhua said Mr Biden wanted a “candid dialogue and closer co-operation”.
The account devoted much space to promoting China’s line on Taiwan, twice mentioning Mr Biden’s assurance that America does not support its independence.

China is big in Africa, with their investment and infrastructure projects. Of course China gets access to Africa's natural resources, new lands to spread their propaganda and anti-west doctrine. While Africa does get new infrastructure, it comes at a price to China's liken. Many Africans see this as one-sided relationship with China taking advantage of the Africans. They also see China propping up corrupt regimes, with China's "we don't care about human rights" policy.
I remember listening to the BBC late one night. This African guy called in and was complaining that a Chinese manager took his girlfriend away from him. Then he called the Chinese guy a "monkey" I forgot what country it was.

I am not surprised China would want to influence public opinion of
some foreign country to its favour. But I wonder why they have to work
hard to get that job done. China's reputation can't be worse than Putin's
Russia and we know Putin is only hated by about 25% of the world which
doesn't include Africa.

As America and the West withdraws from Africa, China stepped in big and filled the void(for selfish reasons). Except for G.W. Bush was known and beloved for his aid to Africa, not sure if Obama kept up the same level of aid to Africa as Bush.
