Cheap hotels downtown?

Have a weekly work gig by skydome and company wants to cheap out on hotel and I'm in NY. Is there such a thing as cheap accommodations downtown?

Back in 2010 during the G8 meetings, I worked for the Commissionaires briefly. I talked to many of the police brought in from out of town for the event. They told me hotels were so full, they were put in youth hostels for the duration. Now that is really being cheap.

Explain the cheap part, where were they going to stay if the hotels were all full??
