I want to buy a new phone,I've been using Blackberries for ever,I think I'm a flexible person, not to set in my ways I can except change. Most providers (Bell) want 2-3 years or you can pay full retail for a new phone,so I do my home work, pick the phone I want....Then Apple, samsung etc bring out another phone!!! Jesus What if BMW,Honda,GM brought out a new improved car every other week? I was going to get the Samsung galaxy 3 now Windows 8 with phone.tablet and PC all in sync. Can the dam tech makers give us the best they got and let us ware it out before shoving more down our throats!

Almost every product you can think of has some built in obsolecense. Forces the consumer to upgrade and pay a continual outflow of cash. RIM has a trade up program that gives you $100 on a credit card - ok if you can wait the four months to get the credit!

I don't agree with that totally. ^ I think it is the nature of a competitive environment that when you have advanced in your product design, you should get it to market to challenge your competition for market share. competition is good for this... however, if there was a monopoly, then yeah, we could still be using motorola flips from 1998

Yeah I read somewhere that the average upgrade cycle is 18 to 20 months for the consumer.

MONTREAL!!!
Used to own fancy smart phones like a Palm Treo and the Blackberry through AT&T Wireless. Was paying upwards of $70 a month and using only 20 minutes out of 450 minutes each month. Probably one or two texts within a three month period. A bit more probably still less than 15 when contacting and setting up rendezvous with SPs. What a total waste of money.

Then discovered the iPod Touch and WiFi.

Now I just own this and pay only $40 to $80. That lasts for a whole year.

It is nice to own one of these fancy smart phones as I am mesmerized by the iPhone and Motorola Razr Maxx. Yet after doing some calculations, realized I can do the same with using the iPod Touch and my "dumb" Samsung slide phone.

but wait! it is a cheese grater too!

yeah all the extras are just silly fluff to me...if I did longhaul commuter train again, perhaps I would care about all the bells & whistles on some all-in-one gadget.

I used to use BB too, but then I switched over to Android (Samsung Galaxy). IMO, it's much nicer to use, but the keyboard can be a little annoying to use.

Also there are more apps available for just about anything you can imagine. Recipes, pedometer, book reader, music player, expense tracker, instagram, dropbox, games - the sky's the limit.

Forces? I dont think so? It only has that effect because most North American consumers - especially Canadians - are weak willed sheep so easily pressured into spilling out cash for anything some paid-off website or blogger tells them they need to have... instead of taking offense to cynical sales tactics and actually refusing to reward it with sales.

This is not good. We have too much of a throw away economy. Some irresponsible consumer spending and borrowing is a good stimulant. But not to the extent we are seeing (especially now that most manufacturing is offshore). It's also driving the elimination of low end and affordable options for those people who do want to be responsible.
