I have my own cell phones but I have a older friend who never owned a cell phone ask me what he should do. I have monthly plans myself. He's looking for something cheap and not fancy just to have for extreme emergency's. really not looking for a plan. Any ideas and where to go?

Virgin mobile looks good, although I wish they would get slightly better phones.

Seems all the best phones are on Rogers because of their gsm card swap.

i had heard that sometime in 2007, cellphone users in Canada would be able to keep their phone #'s even if they switched cell phone companies. anyone heard any added info on that one? tx.

Yeah, you can now keep your number no matter who you go with.....

Virgin is the best rate at 10 cents a minute + $10.00 a month or 25 cents per minute flat rate. Who cares about the phones, I have the LG and it works fine....

I keep hearing it's going to be in March but I don't think I've heard a firm date yet. All I know is that I'm riding an expired Telus contract right now while I wait for portability and lately Telus has been trying to call me 2-5 times a day, so I figure it has to be coming soon because they seem panicked. :D

Yeah, from that link:

"Throughout Canada, all wireless carriers will, by the same date, be required to release a phone number to another carrier (port-out customers) and by no later than September 12, 2007, to accept a phone number from another carrier (port-in customers)."

So technically while they have to allow you to take your number elsewhere, they are not yet obliged to take such a number until September. I guess the best advice in the coming months is to get it in writing that your new carrier will take your old number before you leave your current provider.

Thanks goodtime, I thought I'd read that somewhere they'd decided on it, but I thought it was implemented already.

Amy, I have to ask: How much are you talking on your cell? I mean, if you're buying a $15.00 phone card everyday, you're talking at least an hour a day and I hate to see what you're doing on evenings and weekends. I also have to ask: Do you also sit and chat on it while sitting next to your landline at home? You do realize that with a landline, you can talk ALL your want ALL the time, for next to nothing?

Sounds to me like you should be using a million minute plan or at least 1000 daytime minutes a month...because at your current rate of $450.00 a month you're using 1500 minutes a month. For eg: Bell has a plan for $100.00 a month where you get 1000 minutes plus unlimited evening and weekends.

Pay as you go plans are only good for people who don't use it that often (or at least as often as amy LOL)
