What purpose does the CBC serve today? What good programming does it produce? Is it just a re broadcaster of American and old CBC programs from the 70s and 80s?

Metro Morning, The Current, Q, Radio Noon, The Late Show, The House, Vinyl Café, Quirks and Quarks, Cross-country Check-up, Here and Now, As it Happens, and the brilliant (tho' not what it once was) Ideas, as well as the all-night re-broadcasts of news from other parts of the world. There's also the interesting music on Radio-Canada. I understand they also have a TV service as well.

CBC is simply a tool for the Liberals to get their word out. IT IS NOT AN UNBIASED BROADCASTER!
I'm sick of my tax dollars going to waste on a station that has nothing of real value.

Their mandate is to inform Canadians about the latest happenings on Coronation Street.

Their news and documentary stations are top notch. The main TV network has it's high points beyond hockey as well.

A viable, well funded, arms length public broadcaster (Be it on Radio, TV, or the Internet) is a valuable public service. The only developed Western nation without a strong arms length public broadcaster is due south, and even their 'good news' is pretty bad for a large variety of reasons. Predominantly private reflecting cooperate biases, highly consolidated, ratings driven, and with an interpretation of free speech that makes spin, lies, opinions, wanking, and propaganda into news and high culture. Not that you only want public broadcasters, but you want two strong systems in parallel with some asymmetric competition.

I value CBC Radio 2. It's the only voice on the radio that discusses global topics in an intelligent way. I like the fact that people all over Canada, especially the ones living in rural parts get to hear stories about women's issue in Africa, philosophical debate about health care, and many other topics of this ilk. It provides a conduit for creating a collective consciousness about our place in this world as Canadians.
+1

CBC Radio 2, everywhere music takes you. It's the best choice for the morning commute. And Tempo with Judy Nasrallah.

Note: 107.1 is frighetning with those freak laughs.

If there was another party in power you could just change the party name. CBC is a propoganda machine...so is every other major network in the world, none of them are unbiased.

CBC is the only channel (TV and Radio) in much of Canada.

Once you get into the small towns, you are lucky to have the CBC and one or two other (bad) stations.

Ditto that.

I'm fairly fiscally conservative, but I like the CBC (both Radio and TV).

When you're in a remote area of Canada (and god only knows how often I have been) the CBC is a welcome voice over the radio.

To me, it offers programming that the major American Networks would NEVER dream of broadcasting (they usually pander to the lowest common Denominator - witness the Transformation of A&E from Arts and Entertainment to "White Trash TV").

If you don't like it, change the channel. As far as whining about your tax dollar supporting the CBC, well, fuck off because that's not how it works. I'm sure that there is one group or another who whine about "my tax dollars being spent on abortion, or the military, or education when I don't have kids. Blah blah blah.

CBC radio is just about the only intelligent radio out there. The rest of commercial radio blows gack.

Yeah, it's a bit left leaning, but it's intelligent.

Liberal bias? I disagree. Left leaning, sure. Also, it ensures that all Canadians get news and they actually talk about CANADA! How about them apples. Ever try to get Canuck news and issues on the other channels?

Ever listen to the news? Try listening the World at Six as compared to the nightly news. I rest my case. If you want to be informed, the CBC is very very useful. If you're fine getting MSM crap and being like a mushroom (in living in shit in the dark), ignore the CBC, but leave it alone for the rest of us who want to know what is going on.

The government should not be in the broadcast business. There is absolutely no need for the government to be running television and radio stations. What a waste of money. Oh ya, and get rid of the CRTC too.
