CBC: Dragons den, comments and opinions.

In the first episode of Dragons den on the CBC ( 8:00 PM Wednesday nights) one lady came on with the idea of renting office space so that office workers can pop in and take a nap, the episode last week had a woman with the idea of a blanket to keep your bath water warm longer. These are crazy ideas.
The idea that got finaced this weekk was a belt dispenser for hand disinfectant to be used in hospitals. While it is a good idea, what will stop me from getting big drums of hand disinfectant and belt dispensers made in China and going into competition with this guy on television.
I beleive that by disecting these business models we can put our collective minds together and learn a few things.

The belt dispenser hand disinfectant brothers are a small success, winning several awards in the past year. They were a poster case for angel investors: existing new product, real cash sales, solid management.

A show contract requirement was to be aware of result of public disclosure of your idea. Developing brand recognition, sales and distribution network is much more work than product development, hence offshore competition is pointless until domestic markets are established and mature.

The market is already there.

The inly difference is that the hospital employees have to go to a dispensing station on the wall to get the disinfectant.
If you build a distribution network with a good client list, big companies such as J & J will want to buy up these clients.

This week: Dragons den.

The Dragons den this week on the CBC, featured a woman that wanted to start a franchise called BIKINI WEENIE, this concept is flawed as it is just an old idea that is popular in places like California and Florida.
There was aloso a good idea that was presented by 4 young guys trying to set up a web site called JOBLOFT. While this is a good idea, the mistake they made was to present it on national television and allowing the whole contry to know what they are intending to do.
