trading off Halak before negotiating an extension to Price is hardly a strategic move from Montreal's standpoint. Now, how does Montreal move forward from this? Price is the only #1 in town, now, and he can demand a pretty penny... what do you guys think he's worth and for how long? I think he's a risky play, imo.

He's going to settle for under $4 and freaking like it or else he can go and Alex Auld will do for now! He is risky and they know that but Halak commanded too much so in this lovely cap world they had no choice.

Price should have requested arbitration. He signed when he was 19 and has significant playing time in each of the last three seasons.

Did Montreal even seriously attempt to sign Halak ?
He signed for $3.75 per for four years.

What ($) does Montreal hope to get Price ?

Price is not arbitration eligible.

I would say Price should get two years, no more than 4.5 M$ total (2.75 M$ per year).

uhh, Halak is under contract for $3.75M until 2014... his contract was already negotiated- definitely an affordable starter goalie... Is Price really worth that much more than Halak??

I thought it was three years for goalies.

In any event Montreal said he is their number one, so he should hold out for a one year contract( he would then be arbitration eligible) for at least $3.0mil. unless they want to go to $3.5 per, then, as his agent, I would say OK to a multi season contract.

By his last his numbers back to all star break 2 years ago in Montreal I have to say NO. I love Carey but he has to get his head back into the game or something.

Montreal wanted to deal Halak quickly before all the UFA goalies hit the market on July 1. Also, if they signed Price first and then dealt Halak, they would not be trading from a position of strength, as with Price signed, other teams would know they would have to trade Halak to stay under the salary cap. Furthermore, if they were to negotiate with Price first and sign to him for low numbers on the expectation that he would be playing #2 behind Halak, that would be bargaining in bad faith if they then ask him to play #1. End result is, if you can even get him to sign for say $2M before dealing Halak, you have a pissed off goalie that feels cheated.

So its easy to say Habs are in a weak bargaining position with respect to Price because he is now the clear #1. In reality, they are playing it straight with him and they didn't really have much choice.

Good article on the Price situation here: http://www.habsworld.net/article.php?id=2104
It says Price wants to sign for 3 years at $3M per year. Habs want to wait and see about other available UFAs before they commit to a 3 year deal. They may decide to sign Price for 2 years only at $2M - $2.5M per year to save cap money. A shorter contract is cheaper as Price knows he would be eligible for arbitration next time around.
