trading off Halak before negotiating an extension to Price is hardly a strategic move from Montreal's standpoint. Now, how does Montreal move forward from this? Price is the only #1 in town, now, and he can demand a pretty penny... what do you guys think he's worth and for how long? I think he's a risky play, imo.
Montreal wanted to deal Halak quickly before all the UFA goalies hit the market on July 1. Also, if they signed Price first and then dealt Halak, they would not be trading from a position of strength, as with Price signed, other teams would know they would have to trade Halak to stay under the salary cap. Furthermore, if they were to negotiate with Price first and sign to him for low numbers on the expectation that he would be playing #2 behind Halak, that would be bargaining in bad faith if they then ask him to play #1. End result is, if you can even get him to sign for say $2M before dealing Halak, you have a pissed off goalie that feels cheated.
So its easy to say Habs are in a weak bargaining position with respect to Price because he is now the clear #1. In reality, they are playing it straight with him and they didn't really have much choice.
Good article on the Price situation here:

It says Price wants to sign for 3 years at $3M per year. Habs want to wait and see about other available UFAs before they commit to a 3 year deal. They may decide to sign Price for 2 years only at $2M - $2.5M per year to save cap money. A shorter contract is cheaper as Price knows he would be eligible for arbitration next time around.
