A friend of mine drives a Pontiac Sunfire and her heater switch is broken. It works at the level 1, 3, and 4 position but not at the 2 position. She said she's had it repaired once already (replacing a resistor) and it cost her about $180 (the part was about $75). Is this something I could install for her and save her the labour costs?

the best bet is go to junk yark and take the whole heater switch and replace it may cost you $15 to $25

Whats involved in replacing the switch? Is it something a rookie can do?
the problem is not the switch its the resistor again, the part is about $45 form the dealer (dont buy aftermarket to save the $5) and you can replace it yourself, its kind of a pain though. Its located above the passenger foot well, just get your head under there and you will see the wiring harness to it. There are 2 screws but the back one (front of car) is a real bitch to get at.

The resistor pack should run you $25 - $35 for a new aftermarket piece. Its located on the air duct close to the blower motor - its a simple replacement procedure. These motors use a "floating ground" on speeds 1,2,3 and a direct ground on 4. If this is the second resistor pack that's gone I would recommend cleaning up any ground points you can find on the motor.

PS I'm cheaper than Kooley.
