Hey guys, please help me out.

Is a car insurance mandatory here in Ontario? I just got my G2 license this month and I was wondering if I buy a car now if the insurance is mandatory.

I find the insurance rates to be a tad bit expensive at maybe $300 a month? I plan on buying a Honda Fit. Who sells the cheapest insurance and what can I do to make my premiums cheaper? I already took a ministry approved driver's training course. Anything more I can do?

Also this damn insurance companies. They rape you when you are a new driver. They automatically put you in a risk category. Then they only lower their rates as years go by without no accidents. That forces you to be a really good and safe driver. When you become that kind of driver, does a car insurance still makes sense? I do not want to give $ to these people.

Here are answers to some of your questions, and an opinion, and a question:

Yes.

Call around. Use the internet.

You are a higher risk, that's why they put you in that category.

Statistics show inexperienced, young drivers have more accidents than older, more experienced operators..

Drive carefully.

Rape ? Not even close. That is an ignorant use of the word.

You should want to be a good and safe driver.

Have higher deductibles, that will make your rates less expensive.

How old are you ?

Car insurance is mandatory! I thought you stated you had taken a ministry approved training course?

Before you buy that honda fit, check what the insurance is on it; then check other cars in the same class. Toyota Yaris, GM products. Check for insurance rates on several cars, it does make a difference. Honda Civic has the highest rates because they're easy to steal.

You don't want to give these people money? They don't want to give it to you or someone that you injure either!

HOF, he said he took the course, not that he passed it, or even paid attention. :D

LOL! True. I did take a course to reduce my waiting time to take my G2 test from 12 to 8 months. And yes, I do remember the insurance part but I quickly got bored of it and paid no attention. I did pass the damn course though. Just show up to their classes and they wouldn't mind if you doze off.

Any guesstimates on how much a Honda Fit insurance will cost? I really like the Civic and wouldn't mind paying a few thousands more for it than the Fit but I guess I have to go with the Fit now so I don't get raped by the insurance companies.

What company is reputable to be the least evil? I heard Statefarm is ok.

On the other hand, would buying a used car be less expensive insurance wise? I don't mind driving a used car but I am worried about their conditions especially some of them have very high mileage already.

You buy insurance to pay for damage to people and things that you don't have the moey to pay for yourself. You don't have to insure your own vehicle at all, and if you're driving an old third or fourth hand beater you'd be pretty much a fool if you did, but repairs to a beater cost the same as repairs to a new car, so the only reduction in your premium comes from you raising the level at which the insurance company kicks in a share.

Otherwise the only way you can reduce your premiums carwise, is by buying a car that never catches fire, never gets stolen, and never seems to be in any accidents. Your agent or broker should be able to help you there, but more than likely with younger drivers: if the car thieves won't steal it, you won't buy it. Just factor the insurance into your vanity cost. And research that before you pick. Like pre-approved mortgages.

The rest of what you pay—and it's not nearly enough—goes to cover what you do to me and my car in an accident. I've already had experience w/ a redlight runner w/o insurance who t-boned me. If I survive the next one, I'll attempt to ensure he/she won't reproduce. So don't you even think of reducing that part.

The odds of having an officer there on the only three times you did anything that he might have thought was bad driving, and that it was him, and not you who was wrong, are astronomical. Insurance companies work on odds and statistics and they'll say 'chances are those tickets represent your habitual style of driving' and maybe understates it, given how scarce traffic cops are. Certainly you don't seem to notice that black ice as soon as you should. It causes accidents y'know.

If it's past the court dates, then those convictions are the record of how you drive, and you need to focus on fixing that the only way you can while you look for a company that is willing to take on your demonstrated higher risk for less money. Drive better. See the black ice sooner. Don't give the racist cop any reason to notice you.

I wish you luck in your search, but like the guy who says, "Ok so I had a bit more to drink than I shoulda, but no one was hurt, it was just a spot check", there's a lotta denial going on. And you're asking all of us premium-payers to cover you. As if our rtaes wren't going up too. Which is why insurance companies rely on stats and odds, not personal opinions.

With all due respect to lurker2010, if that is the attitude you have about driving, then I am glad you are paying a higher premium for your insurance. You want a reduced rate for attending a driver course, and admit they didn't care if you dosed off in the class? You even forgot about the insurance part of the course, which should be one of the most important parts? No wonder the rest of the public is paying to keep you guys on the road. No wonder also why something is wrong with our driver training if you don't know about insurance and want to pay the lowest rate, without any driving experience? That's another of the reasons why the roads are getting dangerous.

2 weather related incidents.
a) skidding, I can fathom anytime of year.
b) you were driving 115km over the posted 100km. That's 215km stunt driving. Driving privilege, license and vehicles should taken away.

I echo Hof's suggestion. Honda's are very expensive to insure. Call an insurance company and they should be able to ballpark what that or a similar vehicle will cost to insure.

lurker2010, whatever you do, try not to get a ticket. I know a friend 21 years old, got 4 speeding tickets in 2009 and he pays exactly $887.43 / month.
This is so true. When I was young, like 18, I got six speeding or related tickets in one year. In those days in Alberta, you got 2 free, then your insurance company increased your rates 25% for each ticket, so my insurance went from 400/yr to 800/yr. for minimum coverage, for 3 years till they disappeared. Believe me, I learned my lesson. After that, I have only gotten 3 tickets in the last 25 years. That was a lot of money in those days, so to all you young guys, who are now being overchareged, believe me it can get worse. So slow down! You cannot win against the insurance companies, the govenment and the police.

In Ontario, part of your premium is based on where you live. They input your postal code to determine the likelihood that oyur car will be stolen, vandalized etc. If you live in a lower end part of the city, your rates will be higher than if you lived in a safer part of the city. It's a bunch of bullshit but that's how fucked up our car insurance is !!!!

No. If your car's in more danger—because of where you live, or because of how you drive—you should pay more. What would be fucked would be paying the same.

Hi TH,
You have 3 tickets..that makes you almost ineligible for insurance in Ontario. Meaning you are considered high risk. The reasons which are irrelevant to your insurance company... I had 4 ( 2 minor speeding, 1 fail to show valid insurance and the last one I made a right turn on a red light against the sign..) My insurance company sent my broker a cancellation of policy letter after the last conviction so, here's what I did. I called All Traffic Tickets ( on Sheppard Ave @ Midland ) I had him re-open my last conviction ( making a right turn on a red light against the sign ). My insurance will renew now without difficulty because I have not yet been convicted of anything In other words, it doesn't exist yet..... My 2 speeding tickets will fall off next July so renewing next year will not only be a breeze but my rate will go down ( not that its bad at the moment..I currently pay approx 2,000.00/year, but id did go up on my 3rd ticket from about 1,700.00 ).
I didn't think that minor speeding was a big deal ( one was 15 over and one was 10 over, Lord knows I didn't think the fail to show valid insurance wouldn't count...after all, my insurance company certainly knows I have insurance and the right turn? What can I say...)
Moral of the story? Fight EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!
I'm with Wawanesa Insurance. PM me if you'd like the name and number of my insurance broker.....good luck!

the kanetix site is a great place to start. Also talk to friends of yours who are similar to what your are looking for - same age, sex, same type of car.... and ask who they are with as well. An insurance company that gives me a good rate compared to another company may not offer you the same type of deal as they may be looking more to insure people like me and not new drivers like yourself.

All I can say is that when I was making my 2nd foray into being a driver BelAir Direct was more than excellent with me..... they were willing to give me top star rating because I could prove I had had insurance 7 years earlier despite not having insurance in the years between then and the point where I bought my 2nd car. (School then OSAP created the large gap between owning the 2 vehicles) Every other company I contacted would only take me on as a new driver.
