9 people dead including a child. Many injured. Not good.

30 year old suspect, known to police, has been arrested.
It is very UNFORTUNATE that this SICKO guilty party [ not a suspect at all ] did not have a gun and was not KILLED by police as he absolutely deserved to be. Instead taxpayers will spend hundreds of thousands if not millions on mental health care and housing care for this individual. Of course as is almost always the case he was known to police and probably out on bail .To say that I am disgusted with how our bail and justice systems are totally disfunctional is an understatement. I say built a massive prison in the coldest part of the Arctic for repeat criminals - no fences - let them wander out into the muskeg and the cold and hopefully die of exposure.

Holy shit. Why don't they put concrete barriers up so idiots like this can't plow their vehicles through the crowd. Have we not learned from other incidents like this that have happened in Europe and in the U.S? From what I have been reading the driver was a 30 year old Asian male, possibly of Vietnamese descent. Fucking parasite.

Maybe because this was Vancouver? Not Vienna?

Apparently he was also "known to police". How many times have we heard that phrase?

It usually means the individual has been caught many times for many misdeeds and released to be a public menace.

There's an acronym among police personnel that everyone should find disgraceful yet it's entirely understandable.

It's F.I.D.O. It stands for "Fuck it. Drive on."

In other words, an officer might see some type of petty crime in progress and instead of intervening, the officer ignores it and drives away.

Why?

Because they already know that following the arrest, the perp will get released the same day or the next.

Soft-on-crime policies make the act of arresting and processing the perp a complete waste of time.

On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Greece

The police spokesman does a good job here of articulating what he can at this moment.

The comments underneath indicate the press were laughing amongst themselves on a hot mic take before the officials arrived...That's not a good look at all.

Apparently they did an assessment and determined concrete barriers and police were not necessary.
Wonder how that decision was made and what criteria they used.

Oh I dunno. Weighed up the fact that this is Canada and it never happened in Vancouver before?

Dozens of interactions yet it doesn't look like anything was done about it. The warning signs were there we just turn a blind eye to them. I think this guy finally 'broke' because he lost his brother to violence and his mom apparently attempted to commit suicide. Why he chose to target the Filipino community remains to be seen. This is so tragic because it could have been preventable.
