hey guys

my car was recently broken into (luckily no window was broken) but i am still not sure how the thief got in....im guessing he used the old school method of using a coat hanger...keep in mind this car was on my driveway and this occured last night...

anyways, when i got out in the morning to grab my papers from the car, i noticed everything inside my car was literally messed! the dashboard was wide open, the centre arm rest console was open with all the items, papers, cds everything scattered...missing were, my sunglasses, my bag with my laptop, change ($$), and God knows wat else....anyways, i called the cops and i am waiting for the officer to return my call so i can claim what i am missing...

what i want to know....i hope they (insurance) refund the items that are missing and they mentioned i can clean the mess (police said that) so should I take pictures of wat happened or is it okay for me to clean up and I should get refunded? let me know ladies and gents...appreciate it

PS. if the insurance company states its ur fault you left the laptop in your car, is there anyway I can still go thru. with this and get them to pay me for the item (know what I mean)? thxs...i cannot afford the loss!

Don't take any crap from your insurance company. You pay the dammed premium..you deserve to be covered.
The Lap-top may be covered under your household insurance.
This is where its good to have a broker.

Keep in mind that depending on the items you want to claim, the insurance company will need a copy of the receipt.

way out in left field
The previous posters are correct, your auto insurance will only cover items directly bolted or attached to the vehicle and 1 cd/tape that would be inside the radio if it was taken.

All other goods should be covered under your home insurance but they typically have a limit on the value of any one item or claim.

Yes, take pictures, lots of pictures. If something becomes an issue after you have cleaned up a good pictures can save your bacon.

Coat hanger takes too long. Probably slim-jim, tow truck drivers & CAA help people with locked cars.

One late night, tons of squard cars pulled into my old neighborhood caught 2 guys breaking into cars. Apparently, they were moving between neighborhoods, as cops drive them out of others areas.

In some older Hondas, easily open with a chopstick, if you have the know-how. 1 reason they are popular targets, not to mention easy to take apart for chop-shop parts.

Years ago, my car was stolen from my driveway, while I was away on the weekend.

As Tboy suggests, laptop protected under theft clause of your house ins, depends on your deductable. In police report, list items stolen, but smaller cost items are out of luck as it's below your deductable.

In terms of pic, take a few but no one will bother as they get too many car theft cases. It's usually cut & dry with no disputes from Adjuster, they have it down to a science.

In my case, there were tons of greasy finger prints on windows & all around cars. Police never process any of it. They tell me their labs were too busy with murder cases. Thief rings usually use underage minors so no use catching them, as courts will let them walk.

My car was new at the time, covered under the 'new car' opt clause, I managed to get insurance to pay for car shampoo & detailing.
