Then there is the Calgary woman killed by a Mexican whale. Despite all this, Canadians will still flock to Mexico basing their bet that 99% will come back alive.

Lots and lots of really good people in Mexico. Most are sweet, kind and generous. It seemed to me the poorer the more generous they are. There are murders even in Canada. That said I don't see me wanting to retire there either. Other than some really great people, being cheap and warm weather, it does not have too much to offer.

The mentioned crime as well as all of the corruption can make life a challenge. And other than the coastal areas I don't find it particularly pretty. Most of Canada and the US has that beat in spades.

But Barbados does not...and it beats the above two all to hell for beauty and tourist friendly locals. It's the only island I visit regularly rent a mini moke, and drive around all over to hang out with the locals on their beached, in their restos and bars

Tourists or expats living in Trinidad and Jamaica are not the usual targets.

It's been at least a year or two since I heard a Canadian woman was murdered in Jamaica, by a Jamaican. Mexico ...well that's kinda passing news now days. Statistics are way higher.

I agree, Barbados is one of the nicest islands with some of the nicest restaurants you'll find in the region. But there are still lots of petty crimes which don't get reported in the media. When I travel to some of the other islands like Jamaica and Trinidad for business, we must have armed security escorts. Most of the tourist areas of Jamaica are nice, but I would stay away from Kingston. I also have friends in Trinidad and they live in gated communities, carry firearms for protection and don't venture out much without security escorts - lots of kidnappings.

If I was retired and thinking about escaping these bullshit winters, it would be Hawaii.

You can keep Mexico and the Caribbean and Florida.

Hawaii is the USA, but it's not the USA. You have law and order and good government but it's not overbearing like Florida. You can drink the water, walk the streets and drive or walk anywhere by yourself.

The people are cool, friendly and they are not the rah rah USA types that you run into everywhere else in the US.

Climate is perfect, water is beautiful, natural beauty everywhere.

Can't be beat.

Perhaps a little research would be in order for this thread. The linked article from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Statistics Canada would suggest that Jamaica and mainland China are more dangerous than Mexico. In fact according to this article you are 5 times more likely to be killed in Jamaica than Mexico:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/reality-check-how-dangerous-is-mexico-for-canadian-tourists-1.1136003
Note that even these stats don't tell the whole story. In countries like Thailand, tourists routinely "fall" off their hotel balconies plunging to their deaths in apparent "suicides". A "suicide" like this - the kind with no follow-up investigation under bizarre circumstances - won't make it into the stats of assaults and murder. Third World countries gather stats the way you might expect a Third World would.

Actually more Canadians have died in Mexico in past 5 years than anywhere else in world
Even Afghanistan or Iraq are safer destinations

We know why people go to holes like Mexico
It is dirt cheap

Better research would be looking into the stats you quote
You forget many of those Jamaicans are dual citizen living there not just vacationing there

Mexico is far more dangerous
Here is a more reputable source for you

In case you have forgotten, you were dealing in PERCENTAGES of Canadians way back in post 11 (way to twist and turn to try and make a point)
Obvious the raw numbers for death favour Mexico
According to statscan, more than 44 million visits were recorded to USA, compared to more than 1 million visits to Mexico
The fact the percentages are so similar considering the sheer volume of tourists to the States pretty much proves you would be safer in Detroit than any Mexican resort
(Jamaica by comparison had less than 300,000 visits since others mentioning them. There each murder is worth alot more to the averages)

Only 3% of Canadians needed to contact foreign embassy for "distress" (which includes everything from theft to murder)
USA had 1,300 cases
Mexico had 476 cases
Jamaica had 90 cases (most are drug related though)

USA, Mexico, and China were the places you are most likely to die in that order
Mexico, USA, and Cuba were the places you are most likely to be seriously injured in that order
Mexico, China and USA were the places you are most likely to be assaulted in that order
