Here is a novel thought....pick Canada's flag bearer for his/her contribution to Canadian amateur sport and the Olympic team over the years rather than political beliefs. Last time I looked, there are no laws against supporting a sovereign Quebec. And besides, the guy has said that carrying the Canadian flag will be the proudest moment in his sports career. Gill told a Toronto newspaper in 1995, that he voted for Quebec sovereignty in the last referendum.

At the time, Gill also said he doesn't really compete for Canada, he competes for himself.

There are hundreds of Canadian athletes who truly love this country. Why not pick one of them?

The flag bearer should definitely represent Canadian achievement in athletics, however it will be quite a challenge to generate national pride towards a guy who wants to separate from our country.

The fact is, Sheik, that carrying your country's flag is a huge honour in that you are representing your country. This isn't about athleticism or being proud, it's bearing the flag of the country you will be competing for.

There are 265 other athletes, any one of whom would just love to carry the flag. But they chose a Quebec separatist for political reasons, and no other.

Politics? Oh come now. If that were true than why have countries carry a flag into the Olympic Stadium at all. Why not just an Olympics where Athletes compete for themselves rather than their countries. Why not allow the athletes to carry the flags of their provinces then.
