Canada to lose its north?

I just saw a report on the CBC that with the global warming, a northern passage may be a reality in the near future. This of course has some countries (now before you get all lathered up on thinking that this would be the good old US of A, read on...) like Denmark staking claim to areas of Canada's hinterland.

It seems that Canada's armed forces have no ships that can withstand the northern ice and in reality does not have much of anything to defend the north.

Is Canada eager to welcome their new European neighbours?

Of course, this is not to argue that Canada does have serious tools to project force into the far north. Then again, most nations don't either. To imply that Denmark is prepared to back up its claims by sending a flotilla probably isn't that close to reality.

Anyway, I agree that Canada's armed forces need to be beefed up. This is not news.

I remember the incident where the Spanish brough a destroyer to enforce their right to fish in Canada's water. Canada had no vessel to match this response and the US Navy was forced to intervene.

It seemed that this incident should have made Canadians sober up to the fact that your sovereignty is only backed by your means to defend it.

Given Europe's history, an armada doesn't sound that far fetched.

Was my point an analogy? Did you misread what I posted? It was an incident that challenged Canada's claim to its territorial waters.

Oh nothing really, other than this is where the Armada was anchored before setting out to England (actually I think it was Calais but the army was in Dunkirk). Plus that nasty bit in WWII which has no significance really other than it was another Armada. And the Armada was of Spanish origin.

Oh and wasn't Denmark the land of Vikings once? Now there was a ferocious bunch.

You mean the "armada" of fishing boats sent to rescue British soldiers in 1940?

I like to think I have a fervid imagination, but I just don't get this one.
