Canada Post new stamps are 50 cents?

I bought some stamps last night and when I got home I noticed they were all 50 cent stamps. Is this the new rate?? I never heard anything about the price of a stamp going up from 49 cents.

I just looked at Canada Posts website and it still shows the rate of sending a letter in Canada under 30 grams to be 49 cents... so whats going on? why did they sell me 50 cent stamps?

Remember, all older regular stamps (except for postage dues) can still be used with additional postage to make up the various rates .... even old mint Newfoundland stamps are acceptable. Now, the few non-denominated domestic stamps (those with no value) can be used to pay the 50 cent rate even though their initial cost was lower. The new international rate is $1.45 and, officially, the non-demoninated Canada-Alaska Cruise stamp, sold in sheetlets of 10 beginning in July, 2003 for $12.50 can be used without extra franking to pay the $1.45 rate.

It is stupid of them to keep increasing in increments of .01 - this has the effect of creating demand for 1 cent stamps - surely a losing business proposition in the printing of them.

hmm, I havent sent a snail mail in ages - would my 47 cent maple leaf stamps still work? Same design, different number - how do they process this stuff?

A 47 cent stamp may or may not get through. If you're lucky, the automated system will accept it, but my understanding is that workers do occasionally check to verify the amount of postage. There is a possibility that it could be returned to you with a request for the additional cents. As I have access to a fair number of mailed envelopes, I've seen a few under-franked letters get through.... I've also seen some using double postage (i.e. two 47's or 48's) to pay the 49 cent rate (they must be too lazy to buy a few 1's).

The price increase is effective January 17, 2005 - up to 50 cents.
I have been attaching $.49 stamps all day to my email & they are working.
Anyone else experiencing this stroke of luck?

Ya but thats the best part! If there's no marks on the stamp when you're done, you can use it over again. I've been using the same stamp for weeks (every so often I feel guilty & rip it up & use a new on).

I wouldn't discuss this on open forum but I know all Canada Post Employees only surf hard porn during working hous so there is little chance of getting caught.
