Opening flag bearers are chosen on past success. Often on events that happened 4 years back.

These athletes are typically no longer at their peak prime 4 years after medalling. Obviously there are exceptions.
Is it a curse or just getting older (in athletic years)

So Maude Charron overcame the flag bearer curse taking silver. Which is a great feat as her regular category in which she won gold 4 years ago was merge. She shred 8 pounds in the last few months to compete in a new category. She did amazing but the chinese who took gold was too strong.
