the hobby needs more capitalism
Buy it from the Apple Store. All iPhone 4's purchased from the Apple Store will be unlocked.

Thanks but I am aware of that - but an unlocked phone is $550 without commitment. With a 3 year contract it is $159. I have no problem with the contract but I want to use the phone when I travel overseas with local carriers and it has to be unlocked for that to work.

Jailbreak it, then pinky-swear only to get apps from the Apps Store (except for Ultrasn0w). Why do you not want to jailbreak, anyway?

No downside. Change your root password as soon as you jb and you're fine. If things go wrong, restore before you ask apple for help. there's, at this time, no evidence of jb being done after a restore. and if you like the jb, be careful not to upgrade the os when apple releases a new one. you'll need to keep an eye on jb sites to see if/when the new os gets a jb. then, i'd suggest, waiting a week or two before you actually upgrade, re-jb.

as someone once said... it's all good.

Why change your root password?
I have a bad feeling you're leading me on cause I thought everyone knew this already but, no problem. when you jailbreak, one of the final steps turns on something called SSH. This allows wifi communication with your device. the username is root. the default password is alpine. if you don't know this, every hacker on earth does. so just after jb, your phone is vulnerable 100%. you must change the password immediately. it's easy.

once you've done that, breathe easy and start enjoying your new-found freedom. u can use winscp on your pc to transfer files to and from your phone just like another hard drive. any kind of file. you could install dtunes and liberate yourself from the awful hell of itunes syncing (every lost your library? ever tried to just copy a selection of songs and call it an album?). now u can.

Jailbreak enables you to install apps that are not signed for Itune App store. So, you can download any apps from web and install the apps either from the phone itself or from itune. It also gives you access to the UNIX filesystem in iphone! (techies will love it). That means, you can delete files, copy files, etc within the device. If you ever mess up JB, you can always restore the phone with itune to factory default.

Unlocking the locked iphone will avoid warranty and if you mess it up, you cannot revert the change. Your phone will be permanently damaged! If you want to unlock iphone 4, buy it at Apple store then jailbreak it :) That's what i did.

You don't need to unless you have terminal and /or SSH loaded.
If you are jail-breaking, you must have a reason. maybe you want to copy files to your phone. or get files off it. wirelessly. you'll use SSH for that. Now, i can't find where it says the jailbreaks turn on SSH but I was under that impression. I'm not going to restore just to find out tho. Also, there's zero downside to changing your password. So I would.

I'm interested in a site where knowledgeable guys discuss the in-and-outs. So far, I haven't seen one.

It is my understanding that all OS for iphones are jailbreakable. At least that is what I see on the net. So if you upgrade your OS on your iphone I'm sure there is a jailbreak for it.

Is there a downside to jailbreaking?
You realize you have freedom of choice from Apple. You start enhancing your iPhone experience with APPS that either Apple doesn't like because they interfere with their own market offering or because the additional functionality is being with held until you get new iPhone product.

Now as you flex your independence you start to ignore Apple and exercise your freedom of choice as you sail above those enslaved Apple iPhone users around you. You notice that while you are above the typical Apple users, your phone is significantly lagging in other phones. Inspired and free - you leap to the best hardware available and the next time you show your prize to other Apple users they shrink back in horror - ' OMG - It's another Android user !'

Jailbreaking is a small step to the dark side !
