I just ditched bell for rogers (not goign to stay with them, but am waiting for bells chrismas offer) anyways my first day i looged onto my main torrent site (www.torrentbytes.net) downloaded a couple of movies, now i cant get back on the site form my home. I have no trouble doing it form work or other peoples houses, just mine.

Is it possible they can block a site, and if so will changing my ip get around this? and if so how do i change my ip?

No but they can block certain ports that disallow traffic. Read up on some user forums on how to get around this in chaging your ports.

I thought I read somewhere that internet providers in Canada aren't allowed to block a specific site due to Freedom of X (Speech?) issues. I thought they needed some kind of court order (injunction?) in order to block a specific site.

I can't remember what the issue in question was, but some site was doing something "immoral" (but not illegal) and the internet providers said, IIRC, that the CRTC (?) prevented them from blocking access to the site.

I could be wrong on all of this as I wasn't paying that much attention to the issue at the time.

Torrentbytes was having a script problem and was causing problems for a few users. I had the same problem. Try starting a new tab or page and try to relog into the website.

When I first tried to get on the website I could not get on so I tried to refresh the page and got a blank page. I opened another window and typed www.torrentbytes.net and relogged in and had no problem from there.

More and more changes in the code are taking place.
Some of them don't quite seem to be working out as planned.
The coders are doing everything they can to correct it all as quickly as possible.
Again, we can only apologise. //Staff

Running code changes and site updates, are causing login problems for some of our members. These are all temporary.
Please have a little patience while we get everything up and running properly.
We feel that this option is better than the other option, which would be to take the site down for 24 hours.
Please only use http://www.torrentbytes.net to view the site
We appologise for any inconvenience caused at this time. //Staff

Mine does not get blocked but it gets slow!!!

Here's my experience. I start downloading several torrents at once, after a few hours all my internet slows down to a crawl and eventually you cannot go to any site. The solution is to unplug my router for 30 seconds and then I am back. So they may not be blocking the site you just may need to restart your router, not your modem. I am not a tech expert by any means but my IT guy said that Rogers allows you a certain amount of bandwith every month and if you exceed it they can charge you extra unless you have the highest package, or this is just my IT guys theory, they can reduce your bandwith and choke you down to next to nothing?

I have been doing the router reset thing for several months now and except for the minute or two to down to reset the router it works like a charm!

Roger's has been doing some strange things lately. A while back I was shut down due to "yada yada yada traffic on a port something like 237165"...can't remember the actual port number but it was in that range.

Shut down..no warning nothing...seriously hurt my biz.

I installed new firewalls...everything I could think of..btw..the Rogers techs were absolutely useless..they were quote..not allowed to help. Really. So how the fuck am I supposed to find out what the fuck is causing this huge traffic problem they've shut me down for? A little help in where to look..an FAQ..something! Nope...you're off...bubye!

I install new firewalls...on every computer...blocking in and outgoing on the port number. It goes away I'm back on again. Six months later...they shut me down! Again this wierd port.

SO, then I begin a computer by computer search of whats on every machine.

On one..a machine that had been serviced due to a power supply failure..which corrupted the hard drive...and a full new install on the new drive..the employee had re-installed a hacked copy of limewire. This was my culprit.

Think about it...if you are the music industry..and we all know they want to make examples out of grandparents whose grandchildren download a few songs...whats the best way to find out who's downloading? Put hacked limewire software out for download that tells them exactly who's downloading what and from where! It was this piece of "hacked" software that was causing the problem....arrrg!

Still...Rogers had no reason to shut me down. I asked and the reported bounce back was under 100. No one can tell me otherwise that Rogers Legal Beagles are not working with the music industry on this issue to save their corporate ass. I suspect Bell does the same thing.

I urge you...do not use hacked torrent software of any kind if your biz depends on uptime. And make a sweep of your employee's computers to see whats really on them.

Before the true IT guru's jump all over me..I'm a small company. I don't have the budget for a full time IT person..I wish I did. But the big ISP's are playing ball with the music industry and the government when it comes to shutting down potential illegal downloads.

My story is an isolated one..but it is reflective of the current ISP willingness to coperate, while still maintaining the CRTC must mandate first before we act. Sorry..thats long been a hurdle jumped over with no one knowing. You have absolutely no protection from your ISP or the legal system when it comes to what is considered to be, even if not yet proven in the coursts, illegal downloads. As a biz person I learned this the hard way.

Mark, there are a million people downloading these days.
The corp-execs and legal beagles as you called them, sure are going to be busy the next few...years. lol

At least you figured out the culprit.
