Well. there's lots of knowledgeable folks here, maybe you help give me a bit of info... You certainly helped when I was choosing a new computer system.

So, I'm moving to a new address in Peterborough, where cable is available. And I'm thinking of getting a bundle of internet and TV.

INTERNET
The Internet packages are fast! Their Turbo 20 package advertises a 20 MBs speed which is 4 times faster than what I've been using with Bell DSL.
Do they actually deliver that speed?

I know that with the Bell DSL the speed you get is often conditioned by how far you are from the switch. I've used www.speedtest.net to test that speed and it consistently shows just over 5 MBs.

Do the same conditions apply with cable? I seem to recall, that speed with cable is more determined by how many people are online on your cable, rather than distance from a switch. Is that right? If so, how much does it degrade?

TV
The choices seem to be between HD and Standard. Both are digital, of course. The difference is only about 7 bucks between Standard and HD, so it seems almost a no-brainer to get HD, but my question is, will a HD signal play on my standard TV, or MUST I get a HD TV? I plan to replace my old analogue TV with a digital one and I'll probably go for HD, but my other TV is digital , but not HD.

And, finally, our cable provider here (Cogeco) offers the HD receiver free for 12 months and then a monthly fee. Can I use my own HD receiver, if I bought one somewhere? Are they available to purchase?

What do you think?

Comments, suggestions?

Thanks

Correct cable speed varies widely based on how many are using it. DSL is more stable and does not fluctuate as much.

I have cable that claims to deliver 15mbps.
During high traffic times it may slow to ~6mbps.
Other times when not many are online I have received speeds of >30mbps when running speed tests. My provider says this is all dependent on the amount of bandwidth available to be shared at any point in time. My usual speeds run ~13-18mbps.

Just ran a speed test and got this:
