In a van down by the river
I have all sorts of problems with my digtal channels on cable. Rogers has been out here trying to fix for the third time now. Walked in to Radio Shack yesterday and saw that they had a good offer on satelite TV from Starchoice.
This got me thinking about satelite TV. Not sure if Starchoice is the one I want to go with.
I have heard in the past that reception on satelite tv is soso, especially when the weather gets bad.

After the court case in QC is it legal now to get DirectTv?

Any comments or recomendations?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

Satelite is pretty decent.

The dish is a collector and the LNB is the transdusor that relays signal for decoding. Digital technoligies have made it compact and efficient.

BUT remember that cloud cover and snow on the dish will affect your signal. You also need a clear SSW path (no buildings or leaves blocking the linnear path) to maximize your signal.

Dish TV

Make sure the mount the dish so that you have easy access. Five years agot he norm was to mount it on the roof to the chimney.
Now they mount it on aside of house or lower so you have easy access to remov ethe snow if needed after a storm.

Also if you spray the dish with Pam-non stick cooking spray thje snow slides off and you won't lose the signal.

hi langeweile,

if you have a phone line to your place, then consider getting the new digital service from Bell via your phone line. The signal uses the high speed bandwith of Sympatico to deliver digital TV signals to you. If you can get high speed internet service to your home, then you'll be able to get this service.

I live in a condo, and I can get. However, I don't know if it is currently being offered to houses... you should check first...

i worked in home theatre before and TRUST me...cable is better.
we've had satellite at our house twice and my old man is finally happy with cable, even though it took them awhile to figure out the problem.

we had old cable lines running to the house from the street, which needed to be changed to RG6 cable (techno shit but w/e) anyways stick with cable...sat + bad weather = crap, you're right.

These anit-satellite posts confuse me. Now, I live in Southern California so we have no snow problem (I'm not in the mountains surrounding the coastal plain). I have had both cable and satellite with the latter a hands-down winner as to being unaffected by our type of weather. I've never had an outage with satellite; (Direct TV) though had some problems in rainy/windy weather with cable. Reception was equally good from both media. Had cable for over 10 years; satellite for 5++

My DirectTV does go out sometimes when it is raining heavily. I have only had to go up on the roof to clear ice once in four years. It is nice to watch without the CRTC filtering everything.

Satellite hands down. I've lost my signal because of weather twice in 3 years, both times for less than an hour.

It makes be laugh that Cable providers always bring loss of signal up as a reason not to get satellite. I've lost my cable several times more than I have the satellite signal over the same amount of time.

I have a Dishnetwork for the last two years and lose the signal everytime a huge rainstorm happens but this goes on for like 15 or 20 minutes max, and I will agree its nice to have something where the CRTC and their goons dont always chose what i get to watch
