After watching this video, I'm very much inspired to build a gaming PC:

Hmm, my shop teachers never looked like that. If they had the sign ups would have gone around the block Note the use of hand tools. I laughed at the very bad lip sink, but only for a moment.

It is now required that all SPs have the skills to assemble a gaming PC. Nothing is hotter than banging the girl who's screwing in the hard disk for me.

"Yeah baby, put the RAM in there! Yea that's the spot"

Despite the novelty of having a hot girl assemble your computer, I don't think it'd be worth it when your $1,200+ rig doesn't function, because your model doesn't know what the hell she's doing.

there's not much to save with building your own PC

with the price of all the different components, you may as well just buy an assembled one

I get around.
That video had me drooling all right - at all those high end components.

It was quite impressive how all the cabling magically appeared once the components were installed and the 'cpu grease' for the heat sink was pre-applied, I guess. That never happens when I build a computer!

After weeks of comparison shopping I found that NCIX could build my PC for more than $100 less than if I ran around, bought the components retail and assembled it myself - and they threw in the OS installed, free delivery and a 1 year warranty.

No static strap? You guys sure you want to take tip from them?
No need for a static strap if you keep touching the frame. It grounds you just fine.

As for building your own vs pre-built, the debate is between the Dells, HP's, and IBMs and those assembled at your order. If you get a store to assemble you a sweet rig, it's not considered a pre-built and a very viable (even preferred) option.

I prefer assembling my own. With a pre-assembled one.. you sometimes end up with an odd combination of components that doesn't really meet your needs (a $600 processor with a $50 graphics card.. ) and generally speaking, the components that don't fit a "bullet point" (ex. the PSU, motherboard..) are of inferior quality.

So.. even if you spend the same amount of money, you'll likely end up with a higher quality machine that better suits your needs if you build your own.

There's a computer in the video?

As for the debate, a generic PC is cheaper but if you want specs, it makes sense to build it. Of course you can compromise and select the components and have a shop like Canada Computers assemble it.
