A pregnant British woman facing possible execution in Laos will go on trial this week, the country's foreign affairs ministry said Monday.

Samantha Orobator "is facing death by firing squad for drug trafficking," said Clare Algar, executive director of Reprieve, a London-based human rights group.

Orobator, 20, was arrested on August 5, said Khenthong Nuanthasing, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman.

She was alleged to have been carrying just over half a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin, Reprieve lawyer Anna Morris told CNN by phone from Vientiane, the Laotian capital. "For that amount of heroin the sentence is normally the death penalty," she said.

Orobator's mother Jane found out in January her daughter was pregnant -- more than four months after she was arrested, her mother said.

"She became pregnant in prison. We are concerned that it may not have been consensual and we are concerned that someone who finds herself in prison at 20 is subject to exploitation," she said.

Just a couple of things a half a kilogram is just over a pound ( 1.1025).

Second the pregnancy is not a real surprise, either she was raped or tried to make a deal with the only currency she had available. General procedure in these cases down there is the convicted felon is executed following the birth of the child which is then passed to a relative if one is available or an orphanage if not.

The penalties for drug possession in parts of south east asia are well known and not at all flexible, you get caught you are executed

Did anyone ask her mother what her 20 yr old daughter was doing with a pound of heroin in Laos? Talk about being taken advantage of.

omg, what was a 20 year old girl doing with a Kg of heroin. Sad stuff.

Noticed the weight does not work out, "half a kilogram (2.2 pounds)". Anyway, a good amount of heroin.

Penalties are indeed well known and encouraged by the US-led "war on drugs" which has been shown over and over again to be a wasted effort. It drives drug trafficking underground and only encourages crime. It is also used to justify the militarization of the police as well as over-policing in society.

Indeed!

Imagine if all that money was spent on the elimination of childhood poverty ...... oh no, that's no good: children can't vote. How about famine in Africa? No, no good either, no oil over there. How about the elimination of AIDS? No, that won't work, they're mainly gays and Africans.

It would actually be very funny if it wasn't so sad.

Laos is not noted for being a friend of the U.S.A. Your argument Emerging44, might have at least a pretense of being the truth in the case of countries that have close ties with the U.S. but Laos?! Drug penalties there have far more to do with the ideology of the Laotian Government than U.S. anti-drug policy

Pregnant woman won't face firing squad

Samantha Orobator, 20, had been facing possible execution by firing squad after she was arrested in August for allegedly carrying about half a kilogram of heroin. Those found guilty of carrying that amount normally face the death penalty, said the lawyer, Anna Morris of Reprieve, a London-based human rights group.

But Orobator will escape the death sentence because she is pregnant, a spokesman for the Laotian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The country's criminal law prohibits courts from sentencing pregnant women to death, spokesman Khenthong Nuanthasing told CNN. The woman's trial hasn't been scheduled yet, he said, but is likely to happen next week.

Executing people for such a thing is barbaric. IMHO all execution is sheer barbarism. Sure she did something very stupid, but to kill someone for such a thing is daft. Who knows if she was blackmailed, threatened, framed etc etc. No justification to kill this woman at all.

You'd think the pro-abortion crowd would be up in arms that the unborn baby is getting in the way of the consequences of its mothers choice....

Maybe she was raped and she would like to have an abortion but she doesn't want to get rid of her ticket to avoid the firing squad.

If she is guilty, they should just carry out the sentence after the baby is delivered.

If it was a guy, he would be as good as dead.
Equal rights for all.

apparently I was incorrect regarding the penalties in Laos regarding pregnant women, they are not subject to execution due to their pregnancy. Indonesia is not so enlightened.

This however brings up a question regarding jail staff, So missy do you want to get off the execution list.........
