Many blame the McDonnell Douglas culture infecting Boeing after the merge.
DEFINITELY.

It's a crying shame what happened to Boeing. A proud company that once made it their raison d' etre to build the best passenger aircraft in the world. And they did.

The governement forced merger between the crown jewel - Boeing and the soon to be bankrupt McDonnell Douglas is without a doubt what killed Boeing. I cannot fathom how it happened, but the the executives that almost bankrupted MD somehow displaced the executives at Boeing who made the best planes in the world and had built a rock solid company. Somehow MD's culture of minimizing costs and cutting quality to save a dime took over Boeing.

Boeing is way too big for its own good and there's been a lack of true competition for decades. Bombardier and Embrarer can only nibble on the scraps that Boeing and Airbus don't want to compete in. Lockheed's attempt at a commercial jet with the L-1011 failed even though it was way ahead of its time.

Let's never forget that Boeing tried and failed to go after Bombardier's C-series now the Airbus A220.
I don't think they ever went after the C Series. They lobbied the US government to impose a 500 percent tarrif on the C series in order to bankrupt Bombardier and it pretty much worked.

Even Airbus would constantly slag the C Series. They have a guy who works or worked for them named Lahey (if I recall correctly) who made it his mission in life to discourage airlines from buying the C Series. (Though Airbus never tried to have BBD killed by tarrifs.) It was the last time I respected Justin Trudeau actully when, in response to Boeing lobbying the Trump government to tarrif the shit out of BBD, Justin said, OK, then we (the Canadian Gov't) will not be buying any more Boeing products going forward. (Like the F18 Superhornet.)

Unfortunately for BBD, the airlines were scared to purchase the C Series because BBD was viewed as a risk of bankruptcy and BBD was not seen as big and powerful entity like Boeing or Airbus. In the end, BBD sold 51% of the C Series to Airbus for something like 250 million dollars I believe. I was so deflated when I heard that news. But I'm speculating that BBD had no alternative as the C Series just wasn't selling and BBD could not compete with Boeing and Airbus and there was a very real risk of bankruptcy for BBD. Then, just to make matters worse, BBD sold the remaining 49% of the C Series to Airbus for a dollar. Fuck me. So BBD spent BILLIONS designing that plane (a huge portion of which came from the federal government, the Quebec government and the Caisse). By all accounts, the C Series is the state of the art and an abloutely magnificent plane. But that's the story of Canada isn't it. We come up with all sorts of amazing things, but at the end of the day, we are too small of a country to make take it across the finish line.

To say nothing of the Canadian attitude to "eat our young." When someone or something gets too big for their britches, we like burning them down.

There is this European attitude of fuck you and your success and we are going shit all over you.
However you want to say it, Boeing used its influence to bully a competitor into submission.

True.

And I can't help but revel watching them twist in the wind with respect to their shit product lines. The 737 Max is a 60 year old plane at the end of the day and they have nothing to replace it with.

Looks good on them.

I live very close to where the C-Series has been developed and is now built. Your resume of the story is quite spot on. I know a lot of engineers who worked on it. Boeing found out too late how great it would be. But Airbus knew. Yet the new CEO at that time that was suppose to save BBD actually nearly destroyed it all. He took his multimillions, was kicked out, then Airbus was confident in the project. Now it's thriving.

Airbus will be the absolute leader for the next 20 years.
