Blue Box Scroungers

Yesterday I yelled at a blue box scrounger stealing my empties from my porch. If they were at curbside I wouldn't have a problem but coming right up to my door, or at the side of my house, to take stuff well I have a big problem with strangers trespassing on my property. If this were America the scrounger would be looking down the barrel of a gun.

Anyone else have this issue?

Used to have a guy who askwed if we 9a neighbor and I) could put the cans and bottles aside fro him (at the side of our house just part the front steps.

We did so until another guy started coming around earlier and the two of them met up and had a fight on our front lawns over a few cans. We in the area all have kids so didn't want this happening in front of them - we told them all to piss off and wait until they are on the sidewalk!

PS : We are in a good neighborhood and people come quite a distance on Sunday night to collect bottles. Kids are driven to our street at Halloween to collect from us - I hate that too- as that is supposed to be a neighborhood thing - but that's a different issue!

Apparently, there is a Toronto (are you in Toronto?) bylaw that states recycleables put out on the curb for collection is City property and scavengers are subject to a fine.

Yes I'm in Toronto.
Don't get me started on The Toronto Municipal Code...

Generally speaking that would be north of E Avenue and west of A Road. All the neighbours try to outdo each other every year with their Hallowe'en decorating :)

These scavengers are pretty efficient. I put out my old water heater on the curb and it was gone by the second day.

But does it really matter ? I'm sure the scavengers are taking it to a recycle place anyway. The City will still process it and sell it.

I think the bylaw is aimed at the collection of beer bottles by scavengers. The City loses the 10 cent a bottle.

Ah, but I believe there's another bylaw that says you can't put your beer bottles or returnable booze bottles in the blue box...

We always put our bottles on the porch for a homeless guy that makes our house a regular stop...sometimes he knocks on the door to thank us, mostly he just quietly picks up the bottles and leaves. Nice to help a little...nice to know the bottles are being recycled and I don't have to haul them back to the beer store.
No big deal to me...means something to the homeless dude

Clearly not in Toronto which has no Monday collections. We're on the east side off the Danny and have to put up with the Hallowe'en drive-bys too—700 by acual candy count last year—but I applaud the enterprise of the BottleDudes (M&F) who started appearing when McG made it profitable to stripmine the neighbourhood wine bottles. That's the free market working. Nice folks too, if you talk to them.

Question: With almost all Ontario wines produced just an hour and a half's drive away from Ontario's largest wine market, why aren't those bottles being washed and refilled like the beer bottles? Is everyone at Qeen's Park and the VQA and Brewer's Retail sound asleep?
