Still a classic that holds up 50 years later but could never be made today.
No film from fifty years ago could be made today, cinema evolves and you can never make the exact same film even when you do a remake.
Just nit picking I know, but it always kind of bothers me when people say that. (You couldn't make
Star Wars today because things aren't the same as they were in the 1970s in cinema and technology.)
But on your bigger point there, it's true.
Could you
IMAGINE the backlash if this movie was made today?
There would be endless protests from the Rebel news/Fox news crowd about how "Woke Hollywood was going too far" and how horrible it was that the movie made the Black lead a Mary Sue who had to be smarter and better than all the white people, who all had to be stupid racists who were also inbred. And a black Sherriff! Why can't we have a real Western Star like Kurt Russel or Clint Eastwood! Why are we doing this fake woke history?
You would never fucking hear the end of it.
Well, you would hear the end of it, does any one remember the freak out over things like The Little Mermaid - these things probably only last a month or two usually.
But it would absolutely be the latest Woke Hollywood is Bad freak out for a while.
