Yeah, saw that in the Globe and Mail.

I get that the restaurant has probably had problems in the past with black guys dining and dashing, however, you can't do what they did. If the restaurant has a problem with black guys dining and dashing, the solution is to make EVERYONE prepay regardless of race. Problem solved. (I suspect that the problem is more acute in the later hours as well.)

As far as the fine goes, I doubt that the restaurant will ever pay it unless they are compelled to pay. I remember reading about various restaurants in Chinatown not paying minimum wage and benefits. The Ministry of Labour investigated and ordered the Owners to attend hearings at the Labour Board. Solution to problem? Just don't go the Labour Board. Mail comes from the Labour Board or Government? Throw it out.

Is this news for real? :O That's just disgusting and disgraceful. I think people should react against such shameful act.

Maybe the owner visits SPs and found that they ask for fee upfront. So he tried that in his restaurant. :)) Just kidding. It's shameful conduct. Hope he actually gets to pay the fine.

I think the restaurant is clearly in the wrong, but I'm not sure a fine is the right answer. Human Rights Commission is a bad idea, especially the way ours is run.

This is a clear example of racism.

The Humans Right Commission has no authority in the sex trade but what if they did?

I agree 100% this is blatant racism. That said, I think the
restaurant was fined for taking racist measure to safeguard
their business. I would have sympathy for the restaurant owner
if they couldn't get any help from the Human Right Commission
to recover their lost money in the future after the hefty fine paid.

I bet the restaurant will loose a lot more money
doing that from lost business than from unpaid
customers.

Which is what they actually did
ANYONE who was not a REGULAR was asked to prepay

Of course a black person instantly plays the race card

The fine is too low. The restaurant should be made to do community service as well. It is unlikely that many black customers frequent these kind of restaurants anyway and perhaps unwise for them to do so for many reasons. Despite the prepayment requirements, these gentlemen would have likely received inferior service, perhaps even food relative to other patrons, further ruining the birthday party. The discrimination would not have been limited to prepayment only but almost impossible to prove.

My response was based on the presumption that the
guy who filed the complaint was required to prepay
because he was black. According to the ruling there
was no evidence that the non-black customers not required
to prepay were regulars. May be that adjudicator from
the human right tribunal was full of shit and the ruling
decision to fine the restaurant mistaken but I do not know
what facts you talked about are stated as facts in the
linked report in the OP. At any rate I actually have more
sympathy for the restaurant than the black chap who
got the owner fined $10k.

Maybe this guy has skipped before. Servers remember faces, difficult customers, bad tippers, great tippers, and especially dine and dashers.
What happened was naive and illegal.
This is a late night place and the after-bar crowd is a different breed. Lots of wannabe gangsters doing wannabe gangster shit.

Didn’t read the article but sounds like more politically correct garbage coming from our liberal media and government

I eat here 2-3x a month. The service has never been bad and the food is great.

Late at night, a lot of riff raft comes in, sometimes drunk or otherwise in some type of drugs, and act loud and obnoxious.

If that was the case, I would ask them to prepay for a meal too.

yes this place has to deal with a lot of riff raff during the late night dinner crowd. Unfortunately you cant deal with customers that way

Show me a law where it says you can’t lol

Most fast food places you pay first before you get the food. What’s the big issue? Hong shing isn’t fine dining lol

Issue was because they picked n choose who must prepay and who don't.
In essence there is no big deal, pay first, pay after. It's just that some got singled out and they feel hurt.

Personally I don't mind paying first if asked but that's just me.

Times have changed.

In my younger daze, it was common to prepay for late night meals after drinking. We would go to the Shanghai restaurant late at night and pre pay in cash, same with King Noodles on Spadina.

Standard practice.
