Or if the explosives were somehow affected by temperature or pressure changes and the whole plane went boom?
No, you need a detonator which I hope they werent stupid enough to include in the suitcase. Temperature fluctuations wont set it off

Nothing as serious but there was something similar a few years ago when a woman from New Brunswick got home and found marijuana in her bag. She called the police and they tracked it down to a test customs were doing. They had put it in her bag but the dog didn't find it. Here is the story.

There was no detonator, at least they weren't that stupid.

Your have to really be on the ball these days when traveling. I always lock my bags with a good combination lock. Don’t use cheap key locks as the airport security people can open them easily without you even knowing. I want to be alerted as soon as I pick up my bags off the convaer belt if they have been tampered with in any way!. LAX are notorious for opening your bags without you knowing. They couldn’t open my bags and cut the lock off of one of them.. Then they closed it with a blue tag where the lock was saying “Inspected by LAX security they were interested in the bottle of Canadian Maple Syrup I was taking to Australia as they opened it too. This way I knew they had opened my bag and had proof of it. To them it was a dense liquid that could have been an explosive the way it showed up on the X-ray. Peanut butter will get your bags opened too by them .. It looks just like C4 Semtex Plastic Explosives.

I always check right away all my outside pockets on by baggage as soon as I pick it up… you never know what someone might stick in there when your not looking or when the when the bags passing through the airport system in the back. One time when I arrived in Bangkok I found in one of my outer pockets of my suitcase a dirty oily rag that maybe a baggage guy in the back had stuffed in there… for what ever reason I don’t know but I took it out right away!.

In a house.
By the way plastic explosives don't need a detenator to go off, all they need is a electrical charge to go into it. The material they wrap the explosives in is a non-static material to protect it from even static electricity that could be accidently built up in a *******. Remote but yes the explosives could have gone off if the bag was at anytime shocked with electical current.

I was wondering what that lump of grey plasticine was ...

zzap - US law now requires that all bags travelling through US airspace, irrespective of whether or not the final destination is the US, be unlocked at all times. Far be it for me to accuse our American friends of paranoia, but the reality is that US authorities have the right to search any bag that travels on an airplane that transits the US.
